Hi,
Does anyone know if playing (flugelhorn) with a biscupid aorta valve can cause cardiac arrhythmia? _________________ Stomvi Titn Bb 170 Flugelhorn Brass Band Edition

Your doctors are the ones to talk to, not us. My cardiologist offered to conduct a concert for me, but withdrew the offer when I agreed to swap roles and I would do his consulting, diagnosing, using swapping fees) _________________ so many horns, so few good notes... |

Speaking as a physician, I agree with Andy and Nixer. If you are seeking input as to whether it is safe to play the flugelhorn, you're not going to get reliable advice here.
But if you're just asking out of curiosity, here is some general information. A bicuspid aorta is fairly common, at about 2% of the population. So there are likely many trumpet players with this condition. The main complication is failure of the heart valve. It is true that a damaged heart is at higher risk for an arrhythmia. However, it is incorrect to assume that playing a wind instrument could somehow precipitate that arrhythmia.

So far, no new information and I think that is good for me. It was just a thought. Thank's to everyone.
The biscupid aorta valve was discovered 20 years ago when I was 42 years old and from that on the most doctors treated me as a old person. They hardly know anything about doing sport. The only good respons came from a cardilogy-specialist in sports diving. But he is not working in my main hospital. And he didn't mention any relation between playing trumpet and arrhytmia. _________________ Stomvi Titn Bb 170 Flugelhorn Brass Band Edition

This is why you talk to them - you have to mention your concerns, and ask all manner of questions. I do.
That’s the way I learned my defibrillate can take 5ata of pressure, and what would happen if i squished ne of my (once) normal 80m dives... it’s also why my cardiologist gave the all clear to resume diving on a depth limited basis. A few others got involved along the way, but let’s not name drop...
And that’s despite cardiac syndrome, defibrillator, DVT, age, and trumpet personality disorder!
Cheers

I had one. It's replaced now. I'm 64. I have a undergrad degree in trumpet and graduate in French horn. Played brass full time my whole life. And yes I have been in A-Fib most of the time.
But no problems and certainly no indication that any problems came from brass playing.
That said. The advice about is golden. Get to a cardiologist and get the straight story on YOUR body. No matter what you learn, you'll feel better for knowing you have good information.
Best of luck. _________________ Never confuse beauty with things that put your mind at ease. - Charles E. Ives |
