I made a djazzy progressive metal album using trumpet as the lead instrument because I figure what’s more metal than a literal metal instrument? Maybe not for everyone, but getting it out into the wild has at least made the year COVID 1984 if even a small bit more enjoyable.
I’ve been here for awhile and I’d love the feedback of such a great community. I recorded all of the horn parts utilizing the yamaha silent brass—>headphone out—>audio interface—>Logic (effects/mixing). Thank you for listening!

J.D.
That is some really innovative music!
That's taking the trumpet in a very contemporary direction and that
approach is what is needed to keep brass instruments relevant to
today's listeners.
Very nice!!!
Thanks for posting it!!!

Thank you for giving it a listen and of course the very kind words! While I understand and respect the the orthodoxy of classical trumpet playing, I definitely saw this as an experiment to see what else could be done to push the boundaries of what context the trumpet can be used in. I initially set out with no intention of releasing music but to simply see what I could do, and I must say I was unsure what a subjective listener might think let alone fellow trumpet players.
I was inspired by an interview with John Williams when he was describing the "sound of the hero" when talking about the parts he wrote with the great Maurice Murphy in mind. This is the sound I was trying to emulate or create for this project. I had written the progressive metal instrumental parts and it just so happened I needed a lead instrument, so continued the experiment. Its funny how it all seemed to amalgamate together. While I'm still improving my songwriting and playing (going through the Arban etudes as we speak), I'm extremely happy to be able to possibly show how trumpet players but musicians in general can combine interests and passions into something, if nothing else, interesting.
Thanks again for giving the time to listen!
Best,

Hey guys, I posted a short play through of the intro track of my recent album that I recorded on normal Bb trumpet, an octave down on bass trumpet instead. I posted on here awhile ago about bass trumpets/mouthpieces so it’s cool to share what came of that. Thanks for looking!

Very nicely done! Trumpet fits in like a glove!
I can imagine this as a background or a lead theme of a TV series. |

Thank you for listening! I’m hoping to eventually write music for TV/video games so I’m glad it fits that aesthetic. Thanks for the great comment! 🤘🏻👍🏻 _________________ Antediluvian Projekt - An Experiment In Trumpet & Progressive Metal

I think you should contact TV show producers with your material. It has a certain timeliness to it, matching the uncertainty, stress and expectation of magic to happen - against all odds. |

Thank you for the wonderful comments, and humbled by your great description of the chaotic/sinister type aesthetic with the trumpet being the classic Greek-style heroic I was going for.
As far as contacting TV show producers I’m not sure how I’d be in a position to send them my work unsolicited for a possibility of working with them. I haven’t really figured out how I’m going to achieve this as of yet so you may be correct. I’ve been focused on getting some finished work out there.
Thank you for the encouragement, it’s the kind of stuff that gives you powers to keep going! _________________ Antediluvian Projekt - An Experiment In Trumpet & Progressive Metal

Interesting use of the trumpet. Kinda reminds me of the background music for the old SNES Donkey Kong Country game. It blends pretty well too. Cool man! |

Dude !!!!!
That was friggin awesome to listen to. Can't believe that went through a silent brass, your skills aren't just trumpet, but technical skills abound as well. Really cool man !!

Thank you for checking it out! Recording with the Yamaha SB was a challenge to not overblow and push out of tune but I’m happy with how they came out. Now I just need to convince Yamaha to add in a “no reverb” switch so I can get an even drier signal to take effects better. I doubt they had it with this purpose in mind but I could see it being an additional selling point. _________________ Antediluvian Projekt - An Experiment In Trumpet & Progressive Metal

This is amazing that you were able to use the silent brass for these recordings. I can imagine back pressure being a factor. I think the reverb sounds cool and makes your album really unique. Keep the heavy music coming man! |

Hey thanks man! I originally picked up the silent brass unit for practicing in my condo with easily triggered neighbors, and kind of stumbled upon recording with it after recording with proper mics at my parents house proved cumbersome.
So much of what the end result produced was dependent on the process by which I could record ideas easily and “jam” with myself. I’m glad you like the delay/reverb effects, I’m experimenting more with “dirtier” and distorted sounds for the trumpet, I wanted this first experimental project to be more pure and clear tone.
Thanks for the awesome feedback and most of all taking the time to listen!

All of your awesome feedback has given me more inspiration to keep trying different stuff! A few nights ago I was recording some ideas for an upcoming project and decided to press record as I bumble through just messing around!
There’s a false perception of the level of perfection and genius required for musical inspiration. I’ve grown better at embracing the process and just having fun. Thanks to you all for your interest and support!

Hey all, I wanted to share one of my tracks that I thought you may find interesting:
https://youtu.be/TLjc4D2iORU
The rhythmic mechanical shifting sounds were all made pressing the valves of my 1929 conn 2B running it through a distortion/synth/reverb plugin chain. The trumpet parts are played through a plasma distortion pedal. Hope you enjoy! Would love some thoughts on it! Definitely not orthodox trumpet use but I had a blast doing it. Thanks! _________________ Antediluvian Projekt - An Experiment In Trumpet & Progressive Metal

Figured I’d share in an existing thread to not gum up the forum with too much self-promotion. I was asked to add trumpet to a collab track by a talented vocalist/pianist River Rapkins, this was all recorded on my 1940 Conn 12B. Thanks for listening if you do!

This is interesting stuff -- not my usual thing, but I like the way you're putting sounds together. Are you using a looper, on "Magnetogravatic?" How do you minimize the... noise from the SB? I live in an apartment where I can't make much noise, so I'm trying to find the best way to record (trombone, mostly) with a mute (without effing up my sound, chops, and all). I've tried using a little in-bell Dillon practice mute with a clip-on mic -- it's not too bad, and actually sounds remarkably close to an open horn, on a recording. But it's not ideal, so I've been trying the SB. Not too bad, but it does introduce some hiss. I really don't think it's designed to be a Serious Recording Microphone -- it's supposed to be a practice tool. I found that the output wasn't really quite high enough to do what I need, so I got a guitar headphone amp and have been using that, downstream from the SB, so I don't have to crank it all the way up just to hear it well enough. But... all this gain-staging is, for a non-engineer, a matter of trial and error, just twist the knobs until it sounds as good as it's going to sound and doesn't peak, in any of the pieces of equipment I'm using (SB --> preamp --> Eventide H9 --> RC-505 Loop Station --> Tascam DP-24). What other recording setups have you tried, besides the SB, for recording the horn? |

If you don't mind, I have a little criticism. I like what you've done, but it gets a little one notey after a while. You seem to be relying on effects more than composition. Studying chromatic mediants as they're used in film scores should open up a new world for you.
You might want to look into music libraries as a place to sell your tracks.
If you want to explore further, this website for media composers might interest you.
