Whether it's meditation, yoga, Breathing Gym, breathing bags, Air Trainer, Sandovalves, or countless other options to approach breathing practice. What do you like to do and what do you find works the best? What quirky products have been effective in your practice? _________________ Kevin |

Lately I've been doing Vinyasa Yoga each day for just like 15 minutes and that's really great for breathing and connecting to your body. I think activities like Breathing Gym are good for oxygenating yourself and stretching out your body also. I haven't done it in a few years. I think Breathing Gym can confuse people into thinking you should be huffing and puffing a lot while playing. Not criticizing it, but just keep in mind trumpet is a lot different than tuba. I don't like any quirky products at all personally. |

I practice trumpet to work on my breathing. Seriously. Caruso told me that the best way to develop your air on trumpet was to practice trumpet. _________________ Bach trumpet artist-clinician

Hatha Yoga breathing exercises. Nothing really exotic just slow, deep, relaxed breathing. I find that a little everyday helps. One of the most important concepts is that of a 'full' breath. Typically we don't use nearly enough of our lung capacity when breathing. So an important aspect of this kind of exercise is to concentrate breathing FULLY....

I swim. Swimming requires controlled and copious air. Great for lung capacity. After that trumpet to refine it for trumpet. Natural trumpet and baroque trumpet are really good for working on breath. _________________ Bb: Schilke X3L AS SP, Yamaha YTR-6335S

Irons 27 Groups of Exercises practiced according to the author's instructions.
Also, singing. The breathing techniques I learned in chamber singers (in college) have been tremendously helpful on brass instruments. _________________ -Tom Hall-

I will agree with cgaiii about swimming. In my late twenties taking classes about three days a week in college I severely damaged my left deltoid muscle. The physical therapist at the university had me get into the pool each day and tread water both my home pool and at college. When I got better he had me move on to swimming strokes and finally the crawl. I did this off an on for years and it works. I felt like well into my late 30s and 40s I had the best breath control and "force" of my life because of this. I used to run, too, swimming is actually harder work for me. _________________ "There are two sides to a trumpeter's personality,

I inhale, sometimes through my mouth, sometimes through my nose, then I exhale.....I do it all day. I have it down so well that I seem to be doing it in my sleep......so far. |

I have been using the scuba mask trainer that was recommended here....it has been very useful in learning full range breathing and concentrating air flow. |

Learned to do it in school and it is so ingrained I don't even think of it. Helps that I have super-efficient horns that only need a whisper to play.

Nose inhalation is superior, most natural, and less stress-inducing. It also disturbs and distorts the embouchure FAR less than mouth-corner breathing.
Once you break the habit of always-"corners" breathing, you will have a tremendous asset to your playing.
As for breathing excercises, just stay fit and healthy to keep the machine tuned and strong.
Then do "playing" workouts for application TO playing.
Caruso excercises are sufficient and EXCELLENT for that. |

These days, I practice my breathing while walking the dog. I can focus work on my capacity and get it free and easy all before 6am. Quite of lip buzzing occurs as well.
But, I found scuba diving to be quite an adjunct to my playing. As I did a lot of technical diving using rebreathers at depth I developed a very focused, yet relaxed and even breath using as much of a tidal capacity as I could. This helped the equipment work without killing me, and also proved to be very very relaxing. Diving ended up my meditation: nothing like spending a quiet 30 minutes sitting inside a wreck or reef just looking and seeing what was what...
Cheers
