Hi. Trying to expand my library of good trumpet players. Does anyone have any lesser known players that are phenomenal, or that you enjoy listening to? (this is for any genre)
Thanks! |

Bob Viavattine. His solo in Studio Jams #67 Summertime is just...cool.
Pat Halcox and Mike Henry are also pretty good players. |

How "lesser-known" are you referring to?
My talent deserving wider recognition are:
Carmell Jones
Tommy Peltier
Nils Peter Molvaer
Charles Tolliver
Benny Bailey
Bill Hardman

A very astute point. One person's "I've never heard this player" is another person's "I have all their albums" is another person's "I went to school with this individual." _________________ 1932 King Silvertone cornet

I was just referring to generally less widely know players (those you don’t really hear about but are killer players who you can learn a lot from).
I’ll be listening to each of the players mentioned that I don’t already know, which so far is pretty much all of them. Thanks everyone for the list! |

That reminds me, although she's probably among the greats and not the lesser greats...Maite Hontelé. |

I've been listening to these guys, thanks again everyone for the input. It's also made me realize again just how many AWESOME players there are out there.
And I know he's a great, but I don't think Leroy Jones receives enough recognition. Truly one of my favorite players of all time. Love his playing on Harry Connicks Blue Light Red Light album. |

Erik Truffaz he has a number of albums out some jazz, some experimental, all excellent (in my humble opinion).
Jon Hassell one of the founder's of ambient electronic music and a true visionary on the trumpet. His processed trumpet sound (trumpet run through an Eventide Harmonizer) is very cool.
Ibrahim Maalouf probably well known to many on this list but not mentioned enough, his quarter tone trumpet playing is excellent. _________________ Staying relaxed is 90% of trumpet playing |
