|

HI everybody
Yesterday, I forgot my mouthpiece for my rehearsal.
I had to borrow one from my fellow trumpet player, but he plays smaller diameter mouthpieces than I and I was afraid that would be hard to play.
To my surprise, I could play it, and though the sound was a little ' brighter ' to my ear, the low range was so good !
I never noticed that a smaller piece could make my low range mor eplayable.
I was convinced ( why ? ) of the contrary....
Now time to play/test some piece and change my arsenal ( maybe )
Have a good day

I think it's fair to say that a lot more players are using mouthpieces that are bigger than they need than are using mouthpieces that are smaller than they should be.
In that context... I'd expect a good number of players to be pleasantly surprised by something a size or two smaller than they normally use.
Do you intend to try playing something that size regularly? |

Yeah I am gonna try and play some pieces to find what suits me best.
Saw a Jason Harrelson video with some tips on finding the right size |

If the particular piece you tried seemed to suit you, would it make sense to start there?
Unless it was prohibitively expensive, that's what I'd do... Or maybe you could borrow it, even? |

Great advice here, and the idea of borrowing or maybe buying the piece from your friend is brilliant. Could be you hit on something that fits much better - try to avoid the rabbit hole and put some hours into the piece. I'm learning this more and more, and playing for the most part on a cheap Yamaha 11A (Japan). BTW if anyone can sell me another Yamaha Japan 11A please hmu - I would like to have a spare!
BTW if you know what the piece is, someone here may have a used one to sell you.
Best wishes,

I regard mouthpieces not as shoes where only one size fits, but as cars where each type is suitable for a particular use.
I would not take a high performance car to the mall for the weekly shop
I would not take a mud plugger to a drag strip
I would not take a custom hot rod on a long haul expedition along the trans american highway.
My go to piece is a bach 1 equivalent and I love playing on that piece but today I played mariachi at the complete opposite end of the tonal spectrum and the bach 1 equivalent would not cut it so I used my bach 20c equivalent. And that cut it perfectly
I hold a broad range of 9 trumpet pieces and 5 cornet pieces and I use them all.
If we can only play on one mouthpiece and can only generate one set of tones are we really developed and are we doing ourselves justice.
I recommend holding a range of mouthpieces to suit varying needs styles and requirements.
I believe the more variety and complexity of the tones we can generate the more accomplished we are as musicians.
To be able to step easily from orchestral tonal shape to jazz tonal shape to mariachi tonal shape and to fit and blend well in all those styles is for me the height of sophistication as a player.
This is one step along that road if you chose to follow it, I like to think it is a worthwhile endeavour. _________________ Conn 80a Cornet
