Hi
Here’s one for those who have gone though a safari or two:
What are your favorite 3-5 mouthpieces you own? Why are they your favorite? Remember, they can be ones you play or ones you display.
Here’s my list:
1. AR Resonance MLC Bronze. Why? Haven’t found anything better.
2. GR WB Studio. Why? It’s the only lead piece I’ve ever really liked.
3: Vincent Bach Corp., New York 17C1. Why? It’s so cool!
4: ACB 1.5C FX Hybrid. Why? I have a little flugelhorn with me at all times.
5: Parduba Double Cup 5. Why? It’s awesome! Just look at it!
What’s on your list?

I play Monette's because I get a great sound with them and they are easy to control. #2 rims with various cups.
The coolest piece I own is an "Al Hirt" model Jet Tone. It's made out of aluminum! _________________ Bb: FrankenBach, '72 Committee, Conn 22B, King 2070SGX

I often practice on my Bach 7c that I got in high school. I had it gold plated years ago. I often use my Stork 2c. |

That's both an easy and a hard question. I really, really like the AR mouthpiece I play now...but to rank them individually...that's a challenge. At the moment I play my AR deep-V piece the most (the same one as Sergei Nakariakov plays in this video). It sounds a lot different with my Olds Recording though, much warmer and mellow...but with a little sparkle that a flugelhorn doesn't have...really like it.
But the lead and classical pieces are great too, for their own respective purposes and sounds. Choosing between the 3 is like deciding whether you prefer jazz/funk, classical or ballads...they're all nice in their own ways.
I sold most of my other mouthpieces to pay for the 3rd AR one, so a top 5 is hard to do. Still have the mouthpiece that came with my first trumpet, and the Bach 1 1/4C I played most of my life...but I don't particularly care for playing them anymore. And the rest are French horn mouthpieces. |

I probably I don't have as much exposure to different mouthpiece maker but in the last year I came to love the mouthpieces made by Tren Austin from ACB.
After trying many of his mouthpieces I always come back to the ACB MV 1.25 C.
Even though it's a large mouthpiece with a wide open Backbore, it playes rather easy and it's extremely easy to move up and down the staff and it responds super fast. Besides, it has a great sound
The rim is also very comfortable. _________________ B & H Sovereign 928

Bach 1 w/22 throat (Corp, no period) - Have played this since the early 70's; love the sound and flexibility and inevitably migrate back to it after not-too-serious safaris.
Monette C1-2 w/18 throat and Bach 1 rim tapped to Warburton threads - Have used for huge productions requiring as big of a sound as my C trumpet can generate. It's never let me down (but too big for my retired chops anymore).
Wick 3E w/25 throat - A commercial standby forever; my high register go-to.
George Model 2 (screw rim), Vega Co, Boston, early 1900's I've been told. It really needs re-plating and Lord knows what the specs are, but it plays so nicely on D/Eb/F and High Bb/A.
Wedge 665MDV w/25 throat. Fabulous piece that I use at least several time per week in practice sessions to ensure I'm blowing correctly. Also a little reprieve from the bucket cups I normally play. |

I've had a bunch of mouthpieces, expensive ones too, the one that clicked with me is a $79 Jet Tone Doc Severinsen Re-issue from WWBW! |

On trumpet, a Curry 3C is my favorite all-around mouthpiece, followed by a Bach 1-1/2C for classical music. On cornet, a Bach 3 for general playing and a Wick 4 for brass band. _________________ "Brass bands are all very well in their place - outdoors and several miles away ." - Sir Thomas Beecham |

I love this thread, particularly, because we must acknowledge that there is still value in a failed quest. Until recently, I owned a Wedge, Parduba Double Cup, and Bach MV 7B. All very cool in my mind but utterly useless in practice, so, I had to let them go. Here's my current collection of mouthpieces the I use AND I think are pretty cool.
1. AR Resonance MLB. Why? It sounds huge without requiring a ton of effort to play and the rim might be the closest thing to perfect.
2. Monette Prana Resonance B4S3. Why? It's got a liveliness that the AR can't achieve and the response is better for articulation.
3. Pickett 3SO/OS24. Why? It's the best in between I've found for a traditional trumpet sound with more modern performance characteristics.
4. Reeves Dynamic Mass 43S. Why? Similarly to the Pickett, it's sound is more traditional but it's technology is more modern. But this is the commercial side of that equation.
5. Monette Prana Resonance LT B4LDS1. Why? It's the most balanced "lead" option I've found and it sounds good all over the horn.
That's what I've got. Fortunately/unfortunately, I don't have anything I can't use that I keep only for novelty. _________________ Kevin |

Kevin, I completely agree with your #1. The ML rim works pretty much perfectly for my chops. I’ve never played a piece that has reflected my ideal sound and feel as it has. |

1. Smith-Watkins Mike Lovatt Studio with 30g booster. Comfortable. Good sound and endurance.
2. Smith-Watkins Mike Lovatt Lead with 80g booster. Comfortable. Good sound and easier higher register (only by a note or 2 )
3. Warburton 4s on KT* backbore. Rarely used since I got the S&W ones.
On cornet
Warburton 4s on 80*

I own or have owned over a hundred, and the best two all-around mouthpieces I have played are a Warburton 4MD/8 and Bach 6 BM.
Schilke 14 on Schilke horns, too.
For new-ish releases, I like the Giddings 3 pieces.
These opinions are for trumpet, only, of course. Wick /GR / Yamaha rule on cornet. _________________ do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God |

1. Monette B11, for both trumpet and cornet. I mostly play in concert bands at the moment, and the B11 (like a Bach 1B or so, maybe a scooch bigger) makes the trumpet sound warm and dark and the cornet sound like melted butter. They're both old pieces, from the early 90s or so, and have no indication about slaps or any of that newfangled Monette jargon.
2. Monette B2, for jazz.
3. ACB 1.25CS TF, for when I really want to darken the sound of my trumpet. _________________ 1932 King Silvertone cornet

Lotus 3L, the only thing I don't like is that it makes switching to others very unpalatable.
I used to LOVE an old Bach Corp 3B for tone but I just couldnt be versatile enough on it for the different situations I play in. I had no sizzle and felt limited upstairs. |

A George Bukur mouthpiece played by Georges Mager. Vacchiano gave it to my teacher to use when he was a freshman at Julliard in 1938. Its very, very deep.

I bought a GP Bach 3C here about 10 years ago. Was my all-around for nearly the first half of that time. I believe someone did a homemade alteration to enlarge the throat to a 26... but this one actually works. I now use it for lead (though that’s been a while), and to help dial in horns with larger bells. It’s not my primary, but I think I’m gonna get it copied when I have the coin... |

Any Warburton with the 6 wide rim...favorite 3 tops are MD, M, ESV with the 9, 5, H backbores. I can get the sound that's appropriate for whatever style I'm playing! |
