|
|
Hi All,
Due to my life situation I am routinely transporting multiple method books- most of which are over 30 years old. I used to use a vinyl portfolio or folder where I could fit my Arban's, Clarkes etc.. without issue. It was just larger than Arban's and had enough depth for carrying several books without them sliding around and also had a Velcro clasp- it came from SUNY Binghamton bookstore via my brother in the 80's.
It finally broke apart and I am trying to find a replacement. Searched Google and Amazon but have not found anything similar.
Any suggestions?
Thanks for reading the long post!
Cheers,
Marc |

+1
Many method books can be found in pdf format which makes it easier.
I use ForeScore on an iPad.
I have set up buttons to start and stop the metronome for exercises where I want to work at a set speed.
For charts that I have recordings of, mp3, I have linked the mp3s to the chart and created rehearsal marks to facilitate working on challenging sections.
All in all I really like using a tablet. |

If you look around (antique stores, ebay...) you can probaly find a slim attache (maybe 11x14" or so). Another idea is to contact Torpedo Cases and see if they might make you a music folder. |

Thanks for the replies- yes I should probably do that but it is a lot of coin for the large iPad, foot pedal and PDF of all the books I already own. I have been thinking about that for a while. Maybe time to act. |

For practice I find a normal iPad sufficient. And I don’t use a pedal for practice although I did when I was using it for rehearsals and performances. Many don’t.
I do understand the pdf cost factor.
My biggest issue using the iPad in group rehearsal and performances was lack of an accurate way to make notes. My current iPad supports a pencil and that might be good enough. Using my finger just wasn’t accurate enough to make quick, properly placed notes.
Edit: you can always scan any books you can’t find online in a pdf format. I have no moral issues if I already own the books and I typically feel very strongly about honoring copyrights and getting authors their due. Ymmv |

Protec makes a nice portfolio bag. I use one for my conducting scores, but it will hold an Arban's and some smaller books. An Arban's and a St. Jacomes might be pushing it....
Also, it's not technically waterproof, but it does a nice job in the rain.

I stop in at Goodwill periodically and find many nylon laptop computer bags for just a few bucks to choose from. I have 1 especially for municipal band rehearsals, in which I have my music folder, and room for extra parts, with a compartment that will hold a mute bag with the basic three (straight, cup, and Harmon, with an old plunger thrown in), as well as a small bag with pencils, colored markers, and extra reader glasses (an unfortunate effect of celebrating too many birthdays), a horn stand, and small bag with oils and greases, maybe one or two mouthpieces in a a pouch. I have another with my Eb cornet setup for brass band, and one or two smaller ones that are just for music parts I am working on.
They also often have a few barely used small square fabric insulated lunch bags that make great mute bags for special occasions, or that will fit in my larger bag for extra padding for those mutes. _________________ huntman10

Any sort of "school" backpack or messenger/courier bag should work. I just put a pile of method books into my North Face backpack without problem.
When I have to haul around a lot of music (and mutes) I use a trombone-sized "My Mute Bag," which is waterproof. Here is a link: https://www.mymutebag.com/products/my-mutebag-for-trombone |

I always used a canvas tote back in the day. I still pretty much do. _________________ LA Benge 3X Bb Trumpet

One cheap solution is to just make copies of the pages you intend to work on when you are traveling and keep them in a folder. _________________ Brian James

You don’t need the large screen or foot pedal. I’ve been on a 9.7” screen for years, no problems. If you can turn a paper page you can turn a screen.
ForScore has a great crop function which will remove the useless empty margins. It has excellent mark up capabilities, finger or pen as well “stamps” that you can put on your pdf’s. you can creat your own stamps.
Included are accidentals (resizeabe) and DS, Coda marks etc. I created repeat bars, start and end.
I use a split, so the bottom screen is the end of one page and the top is the next page. You can move the split point too.
FWIW, Arbans and Clarke are, I believe, public domain as they are that old.. many others too, so no guilt on internet download.
Scan anything you own with no guilt.
You may be able to find a decent used iPad for a reasonable price.
Remember to back up. |

I've been using a canvas or nylon "briefcase" from an office supply store (or Amazon, etc.) "forever". Decently rugged and not too expensive unless you like the high-end leather versions. The shoulder strap is helpful, too. _________________ "After silence, that which best expresses the inexpressible, is music" - Aldous Huxley |
