|
|
Hello,
I was able to purchase two 70's silver flairs from a music store in Kansas. One is original around 1976-77 and plays great. The other is serial#465xxx and is satin with gold plated slides and a gold wash bell. It is beautiful but I was wondering if anyone has ever seen anything like this from the factory or if the original owner most likely had this done afterwards at some point. They play similar but I love the looks of the satin flair. Thanks! _________________ 52 Connstellation 28-B

Sure sounds replated.
Gold bell flares were common more years than not, but a 1970s King is not something I have seen before.
When you say gold plated slides, do you mean the crooks (as was common in the early 20th century along with gilding the caps, buttons and spit keys), or coming back on one or more slide legs/sleeves also? If the latter, that is an aesthetic of the 1990s, derived from urban styling of the period. It would not be original on a 70s horn. _________________ Ron Berndt

I have not been able to find anything about a satin silver flair so I am tending to agree that it was refinished at some point.
It does play very good and the valves are spotless! Now I have to figure out which one to sell so I can keep my wife "happy".

That is a glass bead blast finish (abrading the raw brass prior to plating, not like the old heavy silver and shell blast). That wasn't done in the 70s. That together with the placement of gold indicates this was plated sometime in the 1995-2015 window (no one is still doing that extended gold look are they?). _________________ Ron Berndt

Thanks for the response! Any idea how I should be taking care of this? I really do not want to mess this one up. _________________ 52 Connstellation 28-B

Keep it in the case when not in use, and keep that case closed.
Anti-tarnish strips and old fashioned silver-cloth are very effective at protecting the silver from sulfur compounds in the air.
Don't use any home made or exotic oils or greases, as the petroleum used in making them may not be low sulfur. And likewise, avoid plastic wrap, insulating foam, and cheap plastics in general that may have the same issue.
For occasional cleaning, McGuire's cleaner-wax on a soft cloth works great to clean up any tarnish that forms and help retard additional tarnishing.
Avoid any aggressive polishing, abrasive silver polishes, and obviously buffing - as these will wear away the silver on the highs quickly leaving the horn with an odd mottled appearance.
If you play it often, like any horn it will need to be kept clean inside using just a liquid dish soap and cleaning brush. You need to keep up on that because an ultrasonic cleaning would not be good for the finish (barring extraordinary steps to prevent affecting it), and acid cleanings always run the risk of damaging the horn, or the finish.
Lastly, if your other horns by chance developed wear marks at the contact points from salt or sulfur in your skin, wear gloves. _________________ Ron Berndt
