And let's not forget that Bobby Hackett was in fact a guitar player...

And the amazing sound of CT on that weird Selmer flügel, unsurpassed!

edit: CT had on this flügel IMO by far the best flügel sound ever!

Maybe, he played guitar very early in the war with Glenn Miller.

Amazing to see KD---'received wisdom' has it that there's only one vid of him extant. Guess they mean as a leader.

It's a great moment when he lays out on his 1st fast blues chorus to lead the well-deserved applause for some very inventive flugel by young sprout Jimmy Owens...

It's really unbelievable what Jimmy Owens can do on a rotary flügel both sound and speed.
And he plays a 4 -valve (Alexander) rotary.
It's very, very difficult to get that sound out of a rotary flügel.

He's still around and sounding good---used to run into him at the Jazz Foundation's Monday night jam at Local 802. I'm sure we've played. Great guy.

I remember an arrangement he did for himself w/strings that knocked me out. I was driving and it was before cell phones, so I never did know what it was---maybe a Duke piece? Also dug A Jazz Caper.

Comprehensive cat for sure...

Yeah, Bobby Hackett's guitar playing was often overshadowed by his trumpet skills, but he definitely had some chops on the guitar too. And CT's sound on that Selmer flügel is legendary, truly unmatched. It's always great to appreciate the talents across different instruments. What a treat! Thanks for posting this. Tell every young kid trumpet player you know to watch this and learn.

Wow. That end section was great. Very little video of Thad really stretching out. So underrated. His writing and arranging took center stage with the big band with Mel, You forget sometimes that he was a hell of a player. Met him once at a festival, incredibly nice man.
