Thanks to the generosity and labor (a true labor of love) of fellow Reinhardt student Thomas LeMay, we have a whole bunch of recordings that Doc made for us to listen to, mostly in his outer office, all transferred to mp3 and available in the still-under-construction Dr. Donald S. “Doc” Reinhardt Listening Zone.
I'll be putting more of these up in the days ahead, but so far we have his Orientation and Analysis session recording, his instructions for the Pivot System Manual of Studies (now available as The Reinhardt Routines), and then his three-part discussion of So You Think You Have Problems?
Still to come is Doc reading his entire Encyclopedia of the Pivot System, a nine-tape documentation of his Berklee clinic, and several other goodies.
This is not about generating clicks or anything else. This is a totally free to the public service with no spyware tracking or any of that crap. For one thing, I don't even know how to do that, and even if I did I wouldn't ever do that in association with the teacher to whom I owe my entire ability to play a brass instrument.
I haven't figured out a way to neatly present the contents of the first two recordings, so I'll put them here:
----------------------------

There are two “new” tracks up as of about five minutes ago:
6. Dr. Donald S. “Doc” Reinhardt - Types IV and IVA Side 1 - So You Think You Are A Type IV?
7. Dr. Donald S. “Doc” Reinhardt - Types IV and IVA Side 2 - So You Think You Are A Type IV?
He talks about a lot of things pertinent to the other types as well. Some great stuff.
Oh, and once in a great while in course of these recordings the old man does dip into the “sailor’s vocabulary” but hopefully nobody will get too terribly offended. If they do, we'll find a safe space for you to go and hide. We don’t want his long past microaggressions to trigger too many of you tough and rugged trumpet players.

Two new “tapes” for you:
8. Dr. Donald S. “Doc” Reinhardt - Breathing Basics Side A
9. Dr. Donald S. “Doc” Reinhardt - Breathing Basics Side B
I don’t know about anybody else, but I sure am getting a lot of good out of listening to these again.
Comments are welcome and encouraged both from the non-Reinhardt students here as well as those of us who did study with Doc. Thanks! _________________ Puttin’ On The Ritz |

I listened to the first 30 minutes of Breathing Basics A yesterday. Doc didn't mince words, did he? I got a picture of a man who was passionate about his convictions. wow. I found it both informative and refreshing. |

Special thanks to Michael Barkley who has been doing audio editing to clean up the sound on these recordings.
We have several now (marked with an asterisk) that are much easier to listen to and easier to understand thanks to Mike's amazing audio engineering abilities.
Thanks, Michael!
More to come, so please stay tuned. 😉

Thank you for these tapes, I've just started going through them.
In the first tape (Orientation And Analysis), I found the section about 'Sensation Theory' very interesting - and it's obvious that Reinhardt thought it is an important part of LEARNING, since he devoted about 9 minutes discussing it! _________________ Most Important Note ? - the next one !
KNOW (see) what the next note is BEFORE you have to play it.
PLAY the next note 'on time' and 'in rhythm'.
Oh ya, watch the conductor - they set what is 'on time'. |

Okay, you're gonna love this one!
I just put up #10, Dr. Donald S. “Doc” Reinhardt - Mouthpiece Discussion and he is in classic curmudgeon form, telling it like it is!
Not for the average thin-skinned snowflake . . . get tough, now, if you're going to listen to this. He had me laughing out loud. This is my teacher!!!
I love it!
Stay tuned for more goodies from the Doc Reinhardt Listening Zone! _________________ Puttin’ On The Ritz |

I just inserted the Dr. Donald S. “Doc” Reinhardt - So You Think That You Are A Downstream Type Performer In The Pivot System - Side 1 and Side 2 recordings after the Upstream recordings, so now these two are numbers 8 and 9, and the others follow in revised numerical order.
I also updated these so that you can click (or right click) on the name of the sound file and (depending on your browser) save the file elsewhere on your system to you don't always have to go to the website to listen to these recordings.
Michael Barkley has done yeoman work on these to make the sound much easier to hear and understand, and his monumental efforts are greatly appreciated. He commented in his last email to me:
Michael Barkley wrote: | Listening to Doc is inspiring me to approach each session better. Amazing the nuance in this that's lost in his books and certainly it's ignored by his critics who only want to paint him as a overly analytical, neurotic teacher who bred students of the same... And it's just not the case. I consider him one of the greatest pedagogues who has ever lived! Hopefully this helps reach some of the stubborn minded disciples of the instrument! |
And I agree! This collection is such an amazing resource because we get to hear the man himself explaining things that might not be so easy to understand when we read it in his written materials.
The Dr. Donald S. “Doc” Reinhardt Listening Zone
By the way, when Doc talked about ABS in the Mouthpieces discussion, he meant to say ABS stands for acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. He got it close . . . I got to meet with him and Garth Pitcairn about possibly putting those mouthpieces back into production in 1981 or 1982, but they were both pretty much done with the idea. Dave Sheetz and I pursued it, and then it was just Dave who I believe inherited the entire Reinhardt ABS Mouthpiece inventory (molds and all), although I could be wrong about that. _________________ Puttin’ On The Ritz |

Thanks for the kind words, Rich! It was my priviledge to help with these recordings. What a goldmine. I would love to have met the man himself. A lot of nuance to his teaching and the hard line no BS stuff... well I love that. What a passionate teacher, and lover of the instrument & music. Definitely inspiring!
Thanks, Rich, and Rick Gordon for this resource!
