Hello all,
I'm looking for a medium bore horn from Schilke, and I'm between the B4 and S43HD (faddis model w/ tuning bell). Both are medium bore and with the #3 bell, but he B4 is mostly brass with a bronze leadpipe, and the HD has a heavier body and a more "Bach-like" leadpipe in yellow brass. I have owned a few Schilkes in the past (B3b, HC1, HC2), but never one of their more commercial/lead oriented models. I'm wondering if anyone on TH has experience with either one of these models and can comment on what they liked and didn't like about each one.
I'm looking for something that will record well and have a vibrant lead sound (think Jon Faddis on the Joe Henderson Big Band album). I'm also interested to hear about the differences in fixed bell vs tuning bell. Schilke's own experiments revealed the tuning bell had better intonation, but I'm not sure that's worth the added fragility and strange architecture. |

I like the B6, it certainly has that brilliance and focus you seem to want. _________________ 2019 Martin Schmidt eXcellence

I haven't played either horn, but do most of my playing on my B2 right now, so can at least offer some info about the #3 bell. Compared to the B1 (#1 bell) and B5 (#2 bell), the B2 has a brighter, more focused sound, and offers more resistance. I bought the B2 specifically with outdoor performances in mind, mainly concerts in the park from a bandshell. It works GREAT for that. Good luck on your search! |

I also prefer the B6, I play tested both and walked away with the B6. _________________ Bb - Schilke B6, SB4-MG Soloiste

Hello all,
I know of a person who bought a B4 and found it a tad too tight for his liking. I agree with Dayton, and feel that the B2 with the #3 bell gives The projection, feel and brightness. I also own a B3 and S33HD for comparison. As for those with B6 and B7's, I am sure that they play wonderfully also, but I have never fully bonded with the #1 and #2 bells as I have owned and played both. _________________ Christian K. Peters

The reason I suggested the B6 is (apart from the fact that I really like it) that the bell is a little less tight than the B4, so that would be about along the lines of what CK Peters suggested. _________________ 2019 Martin Schmidt eXcellence

From what I've read, the 3 bell is larger by volume than the 2 bell, but the 2 bell has a larger throat. I haven't tried a 2 bell schilke, but I'll have to add the B6 to my list. Has anyone tried the S43HD Faddis model and compared it to a B6 or any other schilke? |

I own a B4 tuning bell trumpet, but also have the medium and large bell—converting the B4 into a B6 and B7. I prefer the B6. The B4 is a little tight for me. I find that if I use a deeper mouthpiece (GR 67 MX) on that B4 that it helps. I like a full sound, so I use that MX piece on the B4, B6 and B7. I use shallower pieces on my two Bach horns as they are ML bore as compared to the medium bore for the Schilke horn. It is a mater of balance of resistance and achieving the sound that I prefer. _________________ Yamaha 8310Z

Between the B4 and B6, is the sound of the B4 tight/small, or is it the feel? I can get used to feel, but I want a nice burn in the sound. |
