|
|
How common were Olds Recordings with yellow brass bells? I have recently purchased one that dates to 1963-1964 and has a yellow brass bell, instead of the beautiful rose brass one.
Thanks! _________________ --Matt--

Pics or it didn’t happen.
It should be a Rey-O-loy bell if it’s from the early 60’s. The only recording variant that I’m aware of that didn’t have a Rey-O-Loy bell were the US military Olds recordings which had nickel-silver bells and leadpipes. Those were made in the late 60’s. |

Are you sure it's not just a different finish? The accessory page of the 1962 catalog lists custom finishes that can be requested by the buyer. |

I bet custom order. Are there any extra characters (besides the 6 digits) in the serial number? _________________ huntman10

I'm not certain at all. What makes me think it's yellow brass is that there is lacquer loss on the bell and the visible brass looks yellow. Rose brass would have that pinkish tint, right? _________________ --Matt--

That looks like Rey-O-Loy to me. The bell and leadpipe appear to be the same color. |

Probably, but the lacquer loss on your photo is relatively superficial. I have similar lacquer loss on mine (as well as a few spots with actual raw brass), so I can confirm the lacquer is thick enough that you can actually lose the 'shiny' layer and still have (colored) lacquer left on the instrument. I doubt that the spot you're seeing on the bell is actually raw brass, I think it's still lacquer, just a bit worn.
EDIT: It's actually not unheard of, found another image of a 'gold' bell. |

The valve cluster is brass, you can see the lead pipe & bell are different. _________________ "There is no necessity for deadly strife" A. Lincoln 1860

Here's mine, no lacquer:
Since taking those pictures, this one has been sitting in the garage with no case. I want it to tarnish before selling it. The high copper Rey-O-loy bell and lead pipe stain instantly with every finger print and water drop. The Nickel silver brass is the slowest to tarnish, but it still tarnishes faster than silver. |

Will do. It may be a few days before I can get to that, but will post when I can. _________________ --Matt--
