Trumpet_mom, it sounds like you're a yellow-brass kind of person. That Zeus you tried might very likely have a heavy copper content in the bell (I've noticed that a lot of them seem to be that way). You might see if they have a yellow-brass one for you to try. Personally I think yellow-brass is the way to go. I lot of players are going for a darker tone, but I don't like that darker sound as much. To me it's not as rich sounding. Also, the horns seem less responsive in those copper bells.

Dave,
Very good point. There are lots of very nice looking finishes in the ZeuS line. Copper is said to be a "darker" sound by many (one of the reasons given for why Flugelhorns often have copper bells). Of course mouthpiece and the player make a big difference. I have spent the weekend taking a ZeuS Olympus through 4 states to be played. Some of the players made it sound pretty bright and edgy (it has a copper bell) and some could make is sound very warm and rich.
When you find a horn you like, ZeuS or otherwise, you need to find a finish you like, and then a mouthpiece that completes the setup. Not always an easy task.
