Hi THers, I’m Hoping to tap into the collective knowledge banks.
I just bought a CR301B cornet, but it’s a Reynolds, not a Bach.
I can’t find anything out about the Reynolds. Can anyone share any info?
I’m assuming it’s a student instrument, but that’s as far as I got.
Thanks I’m advance _________________ Play with the QORC and GGHG bands

Try
http://contemporacorner.com/cornets/roth-cornets/
I don't see a CR301B.
Maybe it is a mis-marked Roth-Reynolds - they had a CR310.
Check the serial number and the pictures - perhaps is a new model from one of the company's relocations.
The "B" would indicate a solid brass bell rather than the nickel silver combo they used on some of their horns.
If it is a "Roth" - they were nice sweet playing cornets. |

Thanks for the link. This is really weird
The S/N doesn't match any of the Roth or Reynolds ranges! (547xxx) - that's 200k higher than the 1976 series, so I don't see how they could ever have gotten that high in 3 years!
Also, it doesn't look like any of the Reynolds models:
- the valve caps are different, especially the bottom caps.
- the valve casings look more like Bach_Bundy casings than Reynolds
- it was made in Elkhart according to the bell engraving, which definitely doesn't fit the timing. It looks like a 1970's engraving, but wasn't Reynolds in Abilene by that time?
I did see a note on the Contempora site that Reynolds had a run of short-lived products in the 1970s, so I guess this may have been one of them, but that doesn't explain the S/N - I wonder if it's a stencil made by someone else for Reynolds (my guess would be that it's a Blessing intended to replace the Medalist line).
Anyway, I finally got a chance to play it today and I do love the sound. Meatier than my Holton 504--it reminds me of my large bore Conn 76A (which I made the mistake of selling earlier this year). Which reminds me, I need to get my callipers out and measure the bore

That's exactly what it is.
This is why looking at the serial doesn't mean much, because it's not a real Reynolds.
When Olds went under at the end of the 1970's, the factory closed and the brand names were sold off to various outfits. Some place in NJ owned the "Olds" name for years (maybe still does, who knows). They basically became stencil brands made by whomever - sometimes Blessing, but not always.
This is probably a Blessing stencil "Reynolds." Not that these markings are definitive, but it does say "USA" and "Elkhart" and Bach didn't make stencils, so it's almost certainly Blessing, if the markings mean anything.
So, while it might not be a real Reynolds, if it plays well, that's all that matters. I'm sure it's better than some rando Chinese Amazon/eBay special and if it's a solid playing horn, then it's a win, even if it's not as interesting historically. _________________ LA Benge 3X Bb Trumpet

OK - makes sense now. There was a period of time when Blessing was producing instruments with the Reynolds name.
See "Engravings" tab on the Reynolds website link
http://contemporacorner.com/engravings/medalist/
Also the "Serial Number" tab
http://contemporacorner.com/serial-numbers/obic-roth/
I think this is similar to the Blessing B-123 long model cornet.
Looks like a Blessing serial number from that period. Can't find a picture but check out Blessing B-125 and B-127 trumpets.
Since they were making the cornets for the Reynolds brand, they might have been .468 bore. |

Thank you!
Yes, I think that's it. The valve casings and caps are definitely Blessing, and the case looks like a Blessing not a Reynolds. It plays surprisingly well and easily for a student instrument. _________________ Play with the QORC and GGHG bands
