What is the best method of cleaning out the 2nd valve tube/slide of a piccolo trumpet? I know there is no slide so how do you get to the gunk that might accumulate in that tube? Scott _________________ Schilke B3 '78

Mine comes off.
Try a flexible brush, like a plastic snake, working it in from the bottom of the valve casing. _________________ "After silence, that which best expresses the inexpressible, is music" - Aldous Huxley |

I tried working a flexible brush in from the bottom but I wasn't able to do so, Also, my concern was that I didn't want to score the casing so I didn't try real hard. The brush did not seem to be able to make a 90 degree turn and if it did I am certain I wouldn't be able to make a U turn in the tube. Maybe a heavy string tied to a small piece of chamois? scott _________________ Schilke B3 '78

It's been my experience that when cleaning a horn, there isn't much that gets into the second valve slide. In all my years of playing and cleaning my horns, I think the most I've ever done is rinse it out with warm soapy water - I can't recall ever needing to scrub anything out of the 2nd valve slide, even on my Bb trumpets that get played all the time.
I think that cbtj51 has the right idea - if you feel you must do something, the BlowDry method is probably as good as anything else. _________________ Patrick Gleason

You could always saw it off to see if there's anything up in there.
Then you'll need to sell it...for parts.

I remember when the original Spitballs were introduced. It was when I was in high school. No shortage of entertainment had by launching them across the band room. Not to mention the horror when passing one through a horn that had never been cleaned. Good times. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

Don't eat a pizza and wash it down with beer right before playing your picc and I doubt there will be much in there to clean out. _________________ "Music is like candy, you throw the (w)rappers away." |

I'm with the "leave it alone" contingent.
Every action has a potential risk and a reward.
The risk is messing up the valve casing or dropping the thing while you are trying to wash it.
The reward is probably an imperceptible change (if there even is a spec of debris in the slide) in how the instrument plays.
Soak it in a bath occasionally and be careful with your expensive instrument. |
