What was Mr. Adam’s take on using a metronome?
I really enjoy playing through the routine, but sometimes wonder if I’m pushing the exercises enough and wonder if documenting my speeds may help? Thanks in advance. |

He never had me use a metronome in 30 years.
As far as "pushing" the routine, slower is almost always better.
Tempo will vary every day depending on your needs. _________________ Bill Bergren |

This ^^^
We push the routine by expanding the range (when you're ready), slowing or allowing the tempos to speed up (as you are ready), varying the dynamics, adding new things to the routine, etc.
Experienced Adam students know when they (or their students) are ready to do these things. Most people don't have a sense for that. The point is to always have your mind in the sound and always have the sound float on energized air. Pushing the tempo can cause that state of mild panic that Adam always warned us against.
I wish I had a dollar for every time he told me to "Slow that thing dwon, young fella." That's the key. _________________ Bach trumpet artist-clinician

Unless you are familiar with the teachings of Mr. Adam it would be best to stick to asking questions and listening. _________________ Bill Bergren |

Come on Pat. When has incorporating a metronome in practice EVER been a bad idea? _________________ Patrick Gleason

Focusing on timing instead of tone is rarely a good thing.
At an ITG conference long ago the question was asked of Mr. Adam how to use a metronome. He pointed to the old-style wooden pyramid metronome sitting on the piano, all closed up, and said "Like that." IIRC he did say it had its place but that was not the focus of his talk (he was describing his lead pipe routine and more importantly his philosophy of getting good sound in mind and focusing on that). _________________ "After silence, that which best expresses the inexpressible, is music" - Aldous Huxley |

The question was about using it when practicing the Adam routine. This is not advised, as the metronome can create a sense of mild panic and break the feeling of flow. Adam told me it was fine to use a metronome sometimes when working on a piece of music...especially if it was already learned and near performance ready. But when we do our daily routine a metronome would be working at cross purposes.
BTW, has anyone ever noticed a problem with the sense of time you hear in Randy Brecker, Jerry Hey, Chris Botti, Liesl Whitaker... _________________ Bach trumpet artist-clinician

To clarify, this is the Adam Forum. If this conversation was in the open forums I would have a different take on the role of the metronome when WORKING ON MUSIC. A giant part of my jazz improv pedagogy consists of practicing with the metronome, rather than play-alongs, drum genius, etc.
But this question was posted in the Adam Forum and specifically asks about using a metronome for the daily routine. _________________ Bach trumpet artist-clinician
