Does anybody have any recommendations for good etude books they like to use with beginning students? Primarily the 6th-7th grade level or 1-2 years of playing experience.
Thanks in advance for your ideas! |

Getchell's First and Second Book of Practical studies are terrific for that level, as are Hering's 50 Recreational Studies and 40 Etudes.
Hickman's 100 Progressive Lessons is also quite good. The lessons progress very gradually, and stay within a comfortable range for most players at that level.
Ed: You might also consider Sparke's Skilful Studies and Endresen's Rubank Supplementary Studies. |

I have been using the Walter Beeler method, both books 1 and 2 for many years with very good success. It has a very nice mix of technical and melodic material and is very logically arranged. If the student has been playing for just a year or two, you are likely to start somewhere in book 1. |

I recently published an etude book specifically for beginners in their 1st to 3rd year of playing. 21 Etudes for the Early Trumpeter. It's available in PDF format and includes all the recordings of the etudes played by Cleveland Orchestra trumpeter Jack Sutte, which I think are very helpful for students.
Listen to a sample here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acwUlA9gZ6A
The book may be purchased at nathanost.com. Enjoy!

Hey! I do not have a recommendation for a specific book, since I am only recently in music, but I can recommend the site https://freebooksummary.com/category/the-interlopers as I saw many books about music there. To be honest, most of them are fiction books, like The Interlopers, but you can look suddenly and then there. I wish you good luck with your search. |

The Getchell books are fantastic. I also love the Breeze Easy Books 1 and 2 by John Kinyon. He makes playing fun, introducing new notes and familiar melodies with easy duets at the end of each page or lesson.
I find that if a brand new student struggles with even making a sound, then the preliminary pages (and the rest of the book, of course) of the Rubank Elementary Studies book are great. Getchell, Kinyon and Rubank are my go-to books for beginners! |
