Just curious. I've been using one for a while now but it seems like they aren't very highly regarded here on TH.
I know it's kind of a small, shallow mouthpiece but my lips are on the small side and I have better range and much better endurance with it.
What's your experience with it? _________________ Olds Ambassador trumpets '53, '63, '66

I play a Bach 3C so I got an Olds 3 thinking that I might like it but it just didn't work for me. It felt comfortable but I had a lot of resistance with it. It could have been the horn/mpc combination or the gap but I quickly went back to my 3C. If it works for you then that is all that matters.

I know what you mean. I went from a Bach 3C to the Olds 3. They're very different. _________________ Olds Ambassador trumpets '53, '63, '66

I love the Olds 3! I've recently been experimenting with the Olds 3 and an old Bach 7C in addition to the Schilke 11 I play full time. I've really grown to love the smaller mouthpieces, I just wish my Olds 3 was in better condition. The rim has some damage that makes playing uncomfortable after too long, but I sure get a great sound out of it!
Where did you find your Olds 3 and what kind of condition is it in? _________________ Chaz Ross

The Olds 3 is nothing like the Bach 3. It is a super tight, shallow mpc that I found impossible to play in tune with. A real nightmare piece I was happy to stick in the drawer. Who the heck uses this thing succesfully? I found mine very used at a local music store. Yuck! |

Chaz... my Olds 3 mouthpiece came with a 1963 Olds Ambassador trumpet I bought off eBay last year. The mouthpiece is in excellent condition. I've used it on my Bach Strad silver-plated model 37 and it makes it sound very bright. I play it on a regular basis on my 1953 Olds Ambassador which is in raw brass and I think that's a good combination. I think the Olds mouthpiece and the Olds trumpets go well together.
jgadvert... I didn't hear anyone say the Olds 3 and the Bach 3 are the same. You can eye-ball them side-by-side and tell they're different. Anyway... isn't it great that there are so many different mouthpieces to choose from? Kind of like shoes. Different sizes for different size feet. _________________ Olds Ambassador trumpets '53, '63, '66

Reviving an old thread to ask a question -
I recently lucked upon a '58 Olds Special cornet at a local Goodwill - it's very playable, and includes the original case and paperwork. It also came with what I assume is the mouthpiece it originally was sold with - an Olds #3. Never having played an Olds mp I gave it a go and I kind of like it.
Which got me to thinking about trying something similar on my trumpets. Apart from just getting a similar vintage Olds #3 for trumpets, what's the opinion out there on what might be the equivalent to a late 50s Olds #3 in more contemporary trumpet mps?
Thanks. |

Not sure to be honest. I would imagine there aren't many out there based on how the old ones played. The rim is super sharp and the backbone is really tight (at least the 3 that I have are).
Trent Austin would be the person I would contact about it. _________________ www.mikesailors.com |

I use an Olds 3 on my committee and it seems to work just fine. Its my go to for upper register stuff. Not very similar to the Bach 3C at all _________________ 1947 Martin Committee #3

The Olds 3 is smaller than a Bach 3C. It's more in the range of the 10 1/2C. The cup is more V-shaped than the Bach C cup. |

Yes, it is not like a Bach 3C at all. I have two Ambassadors now and both apparently were delivered new (like my original first one) with these mouthpieces. They are playable, but not as comfortable in my opinion as a Bach 3C or 7C. If you start as a newbie with one, you might be OK for a while with it, but I think eventually you or your teacher will want or upgrade you to something more fitting for you. It worked good for me in pep band back in the day, but use a Bach 3C now.
Just a thought. If it works well for you, just keep using it. _________________ When the spiker speaks, nobody listens
