I quit playing in 2010 but started coming back to the horn in 2019, playing with the local community band and community orchestra... then Covid... and the horns went back in the case to collect more dust.
About a month ago I listened to Dvorak 9 for fun, and something was rekindled so I broke the horns out again. I've been back practicing for just over 3 weeks and decided to record some excerpts to send to the local semi-pro orchestra to try for the sub list.
Anyway, if you want to hear where I'm at and cringe a little, follow the link...

Cringe? That's some very nice playing. Crisp tonguing, and what excellent tone. Congrats!! _________________ Jonathan Milam

Thanks, Jonathan...
I meant cringe mainly for the intonation issues I have since I don't have the face to support the sound right now. I appreciate you taking the time to give a listen! _________________ All the Best,

I think you know where the problems are and can do better. Self-awareness is a big key in resolving problems. Once one has that, you're on your way.
I wouldn't rush it. You're almost there. I think in a short time you can perfect your playing and maybe that would be a better time to present your "audition". _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Nope - i checked the cringe meter - the needle didn't move.
Are you still using DiOrio mouthpieces and backbores?
I've had many starts and stops to my playing over the years. I've found it helpful to add more resistance to my equipment when I'm starting up again. Such as adding a mouthpiece weight or moving to a slightly tighter backbore. (Bach 24 down to a #10, Warburton 8* to perhaps a 6, Diorio G to a 1X etc.)
P.E.T.E. or pencil training also seems to help firm things up for the first few weeks.
Sounds like things are coming along fine for 3 weeks.
Just don't put yourself in a position where you have to play high, loud and long for a few months. It's tempting since in my experience, technique comes back long before endurance. |

That's certainly not a bad start for just 3 weeks back on the horn after a decade hiatus. Keep up the good work. |

Hey Andy...
No, I sold the DiOrio stuff I had. I'm playing on a Kanstul/Monette B6 now, so I'm definitely playing smaller than I used to (Monette C12D). I have a PETE and would do a 5 minute routine on that each morning a couple hours before I'd actually touch the horn. Someone told me it's best to do that before bed, but I keep forgetting.
I'm trying not do the high/loud/long thing but I'm sitting in with one of the local college's big band and concert band in exchange for use of their practice facilities, so that part is a but a bit unavoidable at the moment.
My biggest issue, aside from crap endurance, IMO, is my aperture is WAY too open... my sound is fuzzy and I can't play very quietly. _________________ All the Best,
