Any experiences with 117 style backbores for schilke piccolos?
I know there’s warburton and Greg black.
Any others? Any experiences? |

Is Schilke’s X backbore similar to a 117?
For me, I like the sound of a Bach mp with the P5-4 better than a Schilke but I also think this results in some notes that don’t resonate as well. I’ve tried a Schilke bottom with a Bach top but wasn’t super happy with the result. Following to see what others have found.

The 117 backbore is standard on the Bach “E” cups. Very commonly used for piccolo. From bachs catalog;
No. 117
favors the upper register, standard piccolo trumpet backbore. |

Just to be clear, I’m asking about modular backbores in the style of the 117 made for schilke piccolos in mind. |

You can obtain a regular Bach E cup mouthpiece and have the backbore threaded by osmun, Matt frost, or quite a few other techs. The Bach E cup mouthpieces come standard with the 117 backbore. This is quite commonly done.
Which kind of receiver do you have, trumpet shank or cornet shank? Not sure why it needs to be schilke piccolo specific. |

Thank you for your suggestion.
I’m aware that’s an option.
I’m asking specifically about modular backbores for schilke.
I was hoping to hear some experiences and whether they make a difference or not. |

Yes, 117 backbores work well generally with schilke piccolos. The 117 tends to keep the partials lined up decently on picc. An issue you may run into is that not everyones 117 backbore will be the same. Hopefully, one of the mouthpiece makers/experts can chime in as to why (how far you choose to drill out the backbore).
There are no schilke specific modular 117 backbores for schilkes.
There are quite a few makers that make cornet shank 117 backbores that could easily be used with schilke piccolos. Again, don’t know if you are using cornet shank or trumpet shank. |

Not to hijack this thread, but as a point of information, Warburton has a back bore designed specifically for Schilke piccs and I find that they work great. |

Supposedly, the 10* warburton backbore is close to the 117. |

I didn't know that but that is what I am using on my P7-4 |

What I would do...
For cornet shank piccs, I'd contact Matt Frost and order his version of the 117 backbore, cut for his cornet sleeves and with the full set of them.
Schilke piccs tend to like a slightly deeper insertion so you may want the sleeves to try that out.
(Note Schilke cornet mouthpieces and the Warburton S Schilke picc series insert quite a lot further than a Bach or standard Warburton cornet backbore) |

Yes but what he's really referring to isn't the 10*, it's the S10* - inserts a couple of mm further in the receiver and makes a very noticeable difference in response, which may or may not be to your taste.
(I have one of these I could be tempted to trade or sell, but shipping from UK might make it expensive) |
