I had been playing an Olds Recording trumpet for several years when I decided to find a Recording cornet. I found one from the early 1950s and, after buying it, it soon became my favorite cornet. I even play it in a British Brass band using a Curry BB2 mouthpiece. In my hands the horn has a very mellow tone that can be modified by mouthpiece choice and is my go to horn when playing cool jazz solos or for my own enjoyment. I've not seen many other discussions of this horn and wonder how it is judged by other cornetists. |

I played an Olds Recording cornet in concert band for several years and liked it very much. The BBB i played in at the time discouraged cornets that weren't Bessons or Yamahas. I thought the Recording blended well with those horns. I sold the horn to help fund a divorce and have regretted it since. Every time I see one for sale I think about buying it, but I have a Getzen Custom that fits me well. _________________ Tim Leenerts

The ‘51 Recording cornet I’ve owned since new is the one horn I’ll never let go. Robb Stewart restored it to better than new, and later did the same with a one-owner ‘50 Recording trumpet I was fortunate enough to find. From playing with a modified Olds mouthpiece turned down to the equivalent of a Bach 12 when I was in junior high school, to much larger and deeper BBB style mouthpieces with Warburton backbore to match, it does everything well and with a glorious tone. As I sell off my collection, my goal is to get down to the Recording pair, one flugelhorn (probably my ZKF-1525), and one short model cornet (probably my Wild Thing). Anything else is just gravy. _________________ Vintage Olds & Reynolds & Selmers galore

I have an early '60s Olds Recording cornet that is my absolute favorite horn to noodle around on, and I play on gigs as often as I can justify... which isn't that often.
And I wish I had more gigs that justified playing it. _________________ J. Notso Nieuwguyski |

I found my Recording cornet at the Deseret Industries thrift store in Pokatello. It was sitting under glass wit a $50 price tag. My knees started trembling for fear someone else would sneak in and grab it! I was very low key until I had it paid for in my hands.
I love the horn, especially the tone. It looks good too, with the copper bell and the valves fall right into place under my fingers. In fact I think I'll go upstairs and [play it right now!

I have dreams like that, which is what sends me to garage sales, pawn shops, thrift stores, and eBay so regularly. 🤔
Missed an Al Hirt LeBlanc last week on a buy it now for $100 by a couple of seconds. I spent too long checking the sellers feedback! _________________ huntman10

With 2 Schikes and my Olds, it is the Olds that is the richer and more interesting sound. It’s in the never to be sold part of the collection. _________________ so many horns, so few good notes... |

I'm happy to hear from other Recording cornet lovers. I now have two, an early 50s horn and a 60s horn with the bell tuning trigger. I don't really need two but I'm having trouble deciding between them. The 50s horn requires mouthpieces with the non-standard Olds taper. The 60s horn can use ordinary cornet pieces. I think I like the "feel"/"blow" of the older horn but not enough to get rid of the newer. There are not many horns that I want to have two of but this is one. |

Wouldn't mind trying one some day, but they're rare here...and expensive. _________________ 1975 Olds Recording trumpet

Well, not that expensive for a Pro horn, if you compare the price with a new Pro cornet. |
