Hi all. Piccolo mouthpiece suggestions for "The Trumpet Shall Sound" on rotary picc? Chamber orchestra, medium size choir (40-50), large cathedral.
(I currently use a Bach 7E, but I'm open to suggestions) _________________ Too many trumpets 🤣

What about your Bach 7E do you not like?
Or to put it another way - what are you hoping a change will give you?
Other potentially useful questions to answer (to get more educated guesses in response):
What else have you tried on your picc, and what have you liked/disliked about them?
How much are you willing to spend (no point getting GR, Monette, etc suggestions if you're looking at more modest budget at this point)?
What other brands of mouthpiece do you have experience with in general? Are there particular pieces you like or dislike? |

I'm probably in the minority on this response, but for a picc piece like TTSS, I use the same mouthpiece that I use for Bb trumpet. I don't usually move to a shallow cup on picc unless there is some extreme upper register.
Btw, I play a medium diameter mouthpiece so its not like I'm playing picc on a 1C or anything extreme.
But, I too, would like to hear the answer to TKSOP's question - what causes you to want to try something other than a 7E? _________________ Pat Shaner

I think the 7E is a great choice. I find it’s 117 backbore to be on the large side for piccolo playing, but I imagine it’s perfect for rotary piccolos that run on the tighter side blow-wise. |

If you want a 7E but without the 117 backbore, order a Bach 7EW. It is made with the standard backbore. It works surprisingly well. (I don't normally like "wide" rims, but this one works.) |

To respond to the OP, use the mouthpiece that allows you to get through the piece with the best mix of sound, control, endurance, and artistry. Are you having specific issues with one of these areas that you are attempting to remedy? You are using a fairly common picc mouthpiece that works for many players on a variety of instruments. (Probably the 2 most common are the Bach 7E or a Schilke 11AX on piston horns anyway...the rotaries sometimes want something different) Be as specific as possible about what issues you are seeing and also what specific instrument you are using. Are you just looking for something new? |

Bach 7D or 7DW can work for a little more warmth. Stork makes a great piccolo mouthpiece (Vacchiano series). Curry has options. Pickett, Patrick, ACB, etc.
I just picked up a Stork 5P and Curry 5P to try with my XO piccolo. I’ve been using a very unconventional setup that works well for me (Greg Black 3C top with a Warburton DKT* backbore), but the sound isn’t as compact as a standard piccolo mouthpiece. Don’t be afraid to experiment with something that isn’t a “piccolo mouthpiece”. You never know what will work. _________________ Eric Sperry

In the 70's Maurice Andre played a 7DW for most parts on piccolo, but changed to a smaller Selmer mouthpiece for very high parts. Its in the biography written by Guy Touvron.
I use a Monette AP15 for the bigger parts and a James R New S4MS for the higher parts.
Having two options is not a bad thing if you need a different sound. _________________ Bb - Scherzer 8218W, Schilke S22, Bach 43, Selmer 19A Balanced

Thanks to everyone who offered me some sage advice!
I'm a newbie to this platform and it was great to have peoples hard-earned experience to refer to!
The 7E with the 117 does seem popular and i have ordered a Monette APL S1 so that will be an interesting experiment. _________________ Too many trumpets 🤣

I struggle with shallow pieces and have some success with a Yamaha 11B4 with my Kanstul piston horn. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

The Schilke 11A (a copy of a NY 7E) is a popular picc piece as is the 14A4 |
