Im curious what Bill Adam students might add to how they used the Thieck book. I try to summarize Claude Gordon’s use of that book in the above video in under 60 seconds. It’s a great book and one of two that many Bill Adam students used to buy from the e-commerce feature when it was on my website.

Mr. Adam gave a different "prescription" to each student and he would change the prescription based on what he heard THAT DAY from the student. So there is no certain way the Thiecke book was used.

Exactly right. Each of us only knows how he used it with us. Many (wrongly) assume that is how he used it with everyone. I have one good friend who has recordings of a lesson where Adam has him (gasp!) playing Thieck on the mouthpiece!!!

He told me to focus on an even sound, connecting every note with breath, keeping my energy steady, accelerating the air, blowing flat out through the sound, and keeping the vowel neutral (meaning the same vowel on every note). If we worked on Thieck at another stage he would have told me to focus on different things. And he would have modeled a different sound and approach as we traded in the lesson.

The routine is a vehicle. Everyone had their own, minutely personalized, way to approach things after each lesson.
