Hi everyone
Am on holidays and not playing again with people until September, apart from duets!
Other than Chris Gekker's fantastic article on Summer Practice 2002,
Please could anyone suggest other routines/books/ to practice over
the summer to keep chops in shape?
Thanks for your ideas in advance,
Best. |

Find or form a band. Do gigs. Don't rely on schools to get experience. _________________ Richard

Richard, I wish I could rely on getting experience in schools, but am in my late 40's and teaching in schools!
Apologies for not being clearer. |

Ooops. Sorry about that.
It was a common request by youths when they are on summer vacation. _________________ Richard

Summer’s a great time to play outdoors, like in the woods or near a river or lake. Bring a cornet along on a hike or a bike ride. And maybe visit some open mic nights or jam sessions? Kind like a trumpet holiday… _________________ 1975 Olds Recording trumpet

The summer is a great time to play material that is different from what you are used to. One way to do that is to substitute similar new material into your existing routine. For example:
If you typically play Stamp, try Thibaud's Advanced Method or Verzari's Fundamental Tones instead.
Rather than Clarke's Technical Studies, try Harbison's Technical Studies, Kase's 21st Century Technique or Kunze's Speed Up Your Fingers.
Instead of flexibility studies from Irons or Colin, go with either of Scott Belck's books, or book 5 (Flexibility Exercises) from Tony Plog's fine method.
Leave Arban on the shelf and go with Franquin, Gatti, St. Jacome, Williams for your fundamentals, or even better, go with something more contemporary, like Veldkamp, Vizzutti, or John Daniel's Special Studies, Matt Fronke's Beast series or Dan Rosenboom's Boom Method....
Grab an etude book you haven't played from before, like Brandon Ridenour;s Transcendental Etudes or David Baldwin's Lips of Steel. |

Another approach is to try a completely different routine, again emphasizing new material. Here are some good options:
Michael Chunn's A Trumpeter's Daily Routine
Stephen Dunn's Daily Routines
Aaron Harris's Daily Routines
Albert Mancini's Daily Studies
Mark Ponzo's Daily Warm Ups and Routines
Seymour Rosenfeld's A Daily Routine
Thibaud's Daily Routine
Vacchiano's Trumpet Routines
Verzari's Daily Studies
or a lesson from book 4 of Pappy Mitchell's method, which will cover the bases quite well. |

I always had high hopes for summer practice. I believed I would get in the shed and 3 months later have completely transformed myself and play circles around everybody the world. These lofty goals were unrealistic in retrospect (haha) so I will impart the great wisdom that one of my great teachers imparted on me for this subject:
"Just play one measure of music a day absolutely perfectly."
I'll let you sit with that quote yourself, but quality is always going to be incredibly more important than quantity when it comes to practicing the instrument. In this thread you'll likely end up with thousands of pages of suggestions. All I'm saying is 90 measures, with absolute perfection. The rest, is up to you.
Edit: I realized after I wrote this that you are 40, so now I am just going to leave this here because it's just one of my favorite pieces of advice for summer. And to answer: michael davis' 20 min routine is actually surprisingly good. |

Thanks everyone for your replies.
Especially thank you to Dayton for the practical suggestions.
Indeed, Matt Fronke Beast series look really interesting.....
Have a great summer all,
Best. |
