I just bought a Holton MF ST302 and I'm trying to find out some info about it. First, the Holton logo have double O's (Hooltoon) in top of each other. Serial number starts with 84 thousand. Any idea on the year? I've check the Holton Loyalist site, but no luck. Thanks
I've managed to post two pictures with the O's super imposed on top of each other. Go to the marketplace side and look for a post name Holton ST-302. Thanks again.

I have done a little history on Holton in the past and do not recall any horn with Holton spelled "Hooltoon." Very odd. Is it possible this horn is a fake? Hate to think like that but I know fake's of other horns are out there. _________________ 2018 Schilke B6

Sorry no camera, but I just saw a picture of a Holton ST-302 that Gamon Brass is selling and the logo on the horn is exactly the same as mine. O's overlapping each other. Thanks |

Fraudster!
Note there are 2 different horns in the pics he posted, one in lacquer, one silver, and it's a 304, not a 302.
I don't think Dillon's would sell such an obvious fake, either, They would laugh him out of the store if he brought that in. |

tangentially I owned the ST301 since high school, sold to a great pro years ago, but it was very difficult to play and sounded brash. The leadpipe was something you'd find exhaling exhaust out of the back of a truck and the bell flare was severe. I had heard that Maynard stopped production of it relatively quickly, around 73 or so, and the 302 was the result of his changes. I'm betting Holton was spelled as correctly on the 302 as my old 301.

I looked at the photos in the marketplace and the engraving on my ST-302 isn't like that. On mine it clearly says HOLTON with no double o's.
As for the serial number, I have a 1939 Holton cornet and the serial number is in the 128000 range. So, if the serial number on your horn is in the 84000 range something is off. Holton was probably at 84000 decades before 1939. _________________ HERMOKIWI |

It might be prototype - maybe a 301 or a FrankenHolton.
https://www.trumpet-history.com/Holton%20Models.pdf
Scroll down to the MF horns. It does have the older Holton valve block. The body of the horn is a Holton. The bell is the question.
Measure the ID of the tubing - .468 or .465?
Note - the O's are supposed to be overlapping double strikes just closer together. So the double O's are ok just struck too far apart. |
