I have used Lanolin to great effect in the past for slide lubes. I like it so much, I stopped bothering with synthetic lubes. Does anybody have an experience with lanolin, and maybe a good reason to switch to synth lubes? _________________ Please join me as well at:

I don't like the odor of lanolin, so no desire for me.
Then I find the synthetic lubes to last longer, while maintaining their viscosity, and like Ultra-Pure's lineup come in various thicknesses. _________________ Freelance Performer/Educator

I've found that lanolin doesn't work as well as Ultra Pure or Monster synthetic lubricants in the heat of summer or cold of winter. If you perform indoors that probably doesn't matter. |

The lanolin I get from the maternity department has no odor I can detect. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

As I understand it the raw product can be rank. But the highly purified product used for babies and mothers is consistently fine. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

That's mostly the product to which I am referring. Not the "straight from the sheep's wool" natural product _________________ Please join me as well at:

Hi,
a little of topic but I have been having trouble finding the right "grease" for my Taylor Chicago. The main tuning slide has very temperamental behavior and it only works with very thick grease.
It worked really good with an old Yamaha grease I had which I suspect had lanolin in it (it was very yellow). On the other hand newer Yamaha greases and Superslick dont work at all.
Do any of you guys know if any of the newer greases have the consistency of old yamaha grease? very thick, yellow, probably going to stain your shirt kind of grease.
thanks.

That sounds similar to Hetman's #8 Tuning Slide Grease. |

+1
Alternatively, try Ultra Pure heavy slide lube. It's weird stuff, not really grease at all, but works very well on slides that keep moving when they shouldn't.

Hello all,
I had a small vial of lanolin based grease go bad on me once. Turned my slides green.Once I used a fresh vial, no problem. In the early 80's I was able to buy a large jar from the local pharmacy. It lasted me over 15 years before it got so hard and crusty I just tossed the rest. I don't think I used half that jar in all those years. _________________ Christian K. Peters

I've used anhydrous lanolin (available from compounding pharmacists) for years and years. Never had it go bad. The only down side is it gets really stiff in cold weather and being anhydrous, it has no water in it; thus, you can't microwave it to soften it.
The important point is one should use anhydrous lanolin, not the more common "modified" lanolin, which has other stuff mixed in and is not as stable or long-lasting.
My brass repair guy gets it in the one pound tub and uses it when he puts horns back together.

That's an interesting flex considering that Claude Gordon has been dead for 26 years, and there's been a great deal of advancement in the development of synthetic lubricants since then.
With that said, lanolin still has a place as a lubricant. A lot of reloaders use lanolin mixed with 99% alcohol as a case sizing lubricant - it's sprayed onto cases with a spray bottle, the alcohol evaporates off, and it leaves a thin film of lanolin that smooths out the process and keeps cartridge cases from getting stuck in resizing dies.
And, for what it's worth, I still like Schilke slide grease - I don't need it to last forever - I just need it last long enough and to work well between applications. _________________ Patrick Gleason

For most, there's no reason to buy a huge tub. A small tube lasts a really long time.
