I’m looking for a decent (probably used) trumpet for marching band and as a backup. Preferably under $400 or around that. I’ve seen lots of Yamaha ytr-637 for sale around this price but it almost seems too cheap, is there something bad about it? I can wait a little bit but I need something to replace my prelude that’s in awful condition. Thanks for any help! |

How long have you had the prelude and what issues do you have with it?
Here are your possibilities:
(1) Get your current trumpet fixed up
(2) Get another used student trumpet in good condition for ~$200-400
(3) Luck on to a great deal on a used professional trumpet
(4) Save up for a used professional trumpet (~$1000+)
I would probably go for #1 now and starting saving towards a better trumpet. I don't know the 637 but it is an older trumpet. You could definitely try it. Be sure to read up on things to look for and make sure especially that the valves are still good. |

Since it's just for backup/marching, I'd reckon the Yamaha model you mentioned will do just fine. If the valves are ok and the leadpipe has no redrot, it'll probably be more than sufficient. _________________ 1975 Olds Recording trumpet

Getzen and Yamaha student models should be available used in good working condition around that price. They should work fine for marching band. Good luck! |

I used to use an Olds Ambassador for marching band and it worked well for me. |

My current one is in very bad shape. There are dents throughout and the bell is completely misshapen. Lacquer is coming off almost everywhere. Might have red rot. Plus I got it at an antique store originally thinking that it would be wall art 😂. I’m thinking for the price it would cost to fix it it would be more worth it to just get a new one. I do have a Yamaha xeno as my main horn but I just don’t want to use that for marching band. |

If you really can get a good condition 637 for that price, then get it. It's way better than any student horn. Deals like that can't be found in my area, that's for sure. |

40+ years ago, I used an old Conn 22b for marching band. My daughter used one 10 years ago. I think you should be able to find a perfectly playable but not pristine example for your budget.
The 22b plays well, it's just a smaller bore. I personally liked the smaller bore for marching, you may of may not.
(NOT the new student "22b" model; the old one) _________________ Kevin Mc

My limited experience with the Conn Selmer Prelude leads me to think any money put into reconditioning one might as well be flushed down the toilet. My "almost" step grandson wanted to play in band a few years back, and I got one at a low price on eBay for him. I cleaned it up and popped a dent out of the 2nd valve slide and delivered it. It turned out that was COVID lockdown time, and he really want into it, at all.
I got it back and put it on a shelf. I had a chance to look over one of those Chinese stencils, a Hawk branded horn for about $40. I compared everything between the horns: mic'd the bores, switched valves and slides, compared cap threads. 100% interchangeability, except the Prelude had a red brass leadpipe.
I just was not at all impressed with the Prelude. Get a good Olds Ambassador for $75 and be happy! I have owned dozens of those. Just be sure it has good valve plating and solid solder joints. I do worry about those three point bell to cylinder to leadpipe braces. _________________ huntman10

Where-ever you are seeing 637s for $400, that's a heck of a deal. Those are the last Schilke-designed Yamaha pro trumpets, and are excellent horns (every bit as good as an 8335 in my opinion, just very different responding and centering - much more like a Schilke than the Bach-like 8335). They include the Yamaha "B" bell (Schilke mandrel) in yellow brass. The original finish was a tinted lacquer. These were made 1977-1982 (Schilke also died in 1982, prompting Yamaha to switch their future pro product to the Bach styling previously used for their student line only). _________________ Ron Berndt

If I could get a 637 is very good shape for $400, I'd jump on it. (And this from a person who already owns too many Bb's!) Wouldn't use it for mar hing, though.
For marching, I'd spend $150 and put the $250 in my "next pro trumpet" fund. |

If you can't get the Yammie 637 check out a Getzen 300. It is student line horn that you can find for well under $400. They play very well. I would not hesitate to take one on a gig. _________________ Music is a fire in your belly, fighting to get out. You'd better put a horn in the way before someone gets hurt. |

The Getzen 300 is a safe choice.
If you can get a chance to examine one, some of the older King student cornets and trumpets are very nice. I prefer older ones with the springs outside of the piston stem. They should be .458 bore.
During this period the King valves and slides were great - you should be able to find one for less than $150. |

Yamaha 3335 go for below 400 EUR in my area and I’m told it’s a great horn (beyond marching). _________________ 2019 Martin Schmidt eXcellence

ACB sells a brand new student horn for $400. I would like to hear a review of it if anyone has experience with it. |

How much should I be paying for a getzen 300 in good condition? $200? $300? |

What about an Olds Ambassador. I used one for marching band and it was awesome. I see a nice one on eBay for buy it now $389.00 plus shipping or $299.00 right now with no bids. From Harlingen Texas. Looks pretty good except dent near the 3rd spit valve. _________________ William
