Can an ultrasonic cleaning affect the tuning of the instrument?
I took a rotor flugelhorn to the Luthier, he cleaned it, changed some corks, etc. and gave me back the instrument with the tuning totally out of tune.
From G down everything is high and from G up it is very low.
Before, the tuning was not perfect either, it is a Rott flugelhorn, but at least it was functional.
I blame the ultrasonic cleaning, I was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience. _________________ Notice!!! Amateur musician without formal studies

Check the rotors valve alignment.
There might be 'witness' marks on the bearing plates and the shaft.
Also check that the bearing plates are in correct position, mark on plate and casing should align.
Remove valve slides and look to see port alignment. _________________ Most Important Note ? - the next one !
KNOW (see) what the next note is BEFORE you have to play it.
PLAY the next note 'on time' and 'in rhythm'.
Oh ya, watch the conductor - they set what is 'on time'. |

What Jay said. I doubt that the ultrasonic cleaning has anything to do with your problem. If the horn had debris inside of it, it could be playing a little more openly and the pitch dropping a little, but not what you describe. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Thank you very much, I think I have figured out what was going on.
Rotor 1 got stuck sometimes, so the luthier decided to change the rotors in order, that way, don't ask me why, the rotors move fine, but the instrument doesn't tune, with the rotors in their order, the instrument tunes, more or less, but sometimes finger 1 gets stuck.
I never thought that the luthier had not assembled the instrument correctly.
Anyway, at Christmas I will take the instrument to one of the best luthiers in Spain, Felco Musical.
It is not the first time that I have bad experiences with some luthiers.
They all charge like professionals, but not all of them know how to do the job! _________________ Notice!!! Amateur musician without formal studies

Putting the rotary valves back in the wrong order could certainly make it worse. Changing corks is also a place to look at; How well was it was done? _________________ "Strive for tone." -John Coppola

Another possibility is that a leak opened up with the cleaning process. Have the next luthier check the instrument fully - especially in the connecting passages between the valves and in the bell itself. |
