Cootie's last trumpet was a Conn 2B, which he turned over to Barrie Lee Hall when he retired in 1980. For a short time in the late 30s, he played a Randy Muck. I have the ad, but can we post pictures on this forum?
Cootie is indeed underrated! I'm working on a biography of him - it's surprising there isn't already one available.
I did a presentation on Cootie Williams for the Duke Ellington Society of Sweden last year. It's on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFrFq5Xlgi4
I have a Duke Ellington podcast called "Ellington Reflections." It's at www.EllingtonReflections.com . I have a few episodes dedicated to Cootie and his work can be heard throughout a lot of episodes.[/img] |
