I was throwing the ball to my young son who was trying his hardest to knock one out of the park, and I said, "Son, quit trying to swing the bat and just hit the ball." On the next pitch, he just crushed one. What joy! Coincidence?
With trumpet students it's "Quit worrying about the horn and just play the music."
I use these metaphors with my trumpet students and every now and then, it really clicks.
