I've been playing a Stomvi Elite Bb/A Piccolo for years and it's a great horn that plays really well on both sides. I liked the fuller sound I get vs. my sound on the Schilke P5-4 or the classic Selmer. I can play the D stuff on the A side and it doesn't sound thin or squeaky. And I can also play lightly and lyrically. But, as always, YMMV.
Build quality is top notch - have had mine for well over 15 years and it has been flawless. The gold accents are a bit much for my taste, but I got used to it.
Other horns I play include Bach, Yamaha, and Getzen (cornet). |

Are you using a leadpipe with a cornet or trumpet shank? |

The S3 Big Bell is the easiest trumpet I’ve ever played. It’s also the most in tune trumpet I’ve ever played. It’s tied (with the vintage Getzen Doc) for the best sounding trumpet I’ve ever played. It’s also tried for the best feedback (with the Edwards X-13) It’s also tied for the best looking trumpet (with the Schilke B3). It’s also a close second to the best valves compared to the Getzen. Other than that it’s pretty ordinary. |

Stay tuned. I have a VRII Lightweight (regular bell) arriving tomorrow. I will A/B them and post what I find.
BTW what trumpet stand do you use for your Stomvi trumpets. My S3 bell sticks to my K&M portable stand. Thanks. |

Certainly. KO suggested simply adding a cutout felt. He will send me pics tomorrow. I will probably try that first since I like the K&G portable stand. But I may try the Hercules stand as well. I’m on a trumpet safari already. Why not begin a stand safari 😂
PS What model Hercules stand do you use? |

I have a Stomvi S3 large bell and it is a fabulous trumpet. It plays so efficiently. No wasted breath. A real pleasure playing lead on long gigs. Plays well in tune and slots nicely. I actually liked it a little bit more than the VR 2 which I demo’d side by side with the S3. |

I have one of those; I got it for less than fifty bucks on Amazon three years ago. I rarely have to take three horns to a gig, but I keep it set up in my office and fill it with horns because it looks cool. _________________ Bryan Fields

How did your A/B testing go? I have a brushed lacquer VRII on order and can't wait to get it. Regular weight, regular bell. This will be the third VRII I have owned so far and my personal favorite configuration. |

I have had the same experience on a VRII. Long gigs, no problem, can play all parts in a big band, no problem and have some chops left at the end of a long gig. These horns are very efficient and in tune. I also think they work best with a Flex mouthpiece. I have a 3 series set and I can dial in the gap with the flex couplers. I noticed my accuracy is much better on the VRII/Flex setup.
Makes the grueling jobs a heck of a lot easier for sure.
I have yet to try the S3 but would like to someday. |
