Hello,
I'm looking to buy a new horn, I have being playing a 6310 for many years now. At the local store I can try a few new horns and I'm interested in trying some Shires or Schilke's, I'm thinking about trying the CLW, BLW (Shires) and the B1, B5, B6 (Schilke). Anyone have any feedback on this options?
Thanks _________________ Schagerl "James Morrison"

I tried some shires horns probably 8 to 10 years ago and really liked them. If shires would offer a 1st trigger I'd probably consider one, but they said they could not offer that option. _________________ Current horns

Schilke and Shires both make fantastic horns. I haven't played a Shires CLW or a Schilke B6, but like the other horns you've mentioned. I'd say try as many models as they have available.
The Shires design philosophy (for those models, which are based on Bach) and the Schilke philosophy for the Custom Series is quite different. They'll make for a nice contrast. It is all about what works best for you.
I prefer the valves on the Schilke trumpets, but the blow and slotting on the Shires A and B models work better for me (compared to the Schilke Custom series). As for sound, each has something really special to offer.
Have fun! |

I've tooted all of those horns in the past at NAMM shows. Loved all the Shires AND Schilkes I tried. I think they both make fabulous horns. So, yes, play all of the ones you mentioned to see which suits you the best. (Of those horns, I'll bet you'll like the Schilke B6 better than the other ones you mentioned.)
You might want to also try the latest Bobby Shew horn that Yamaha offers if it's available at your music store. I think it's a significant improvement over your current Yamaha but would likely have a familiarity that you might like.
Please tell us your impressions after you get to actually blow the horns.
Good luck! |
