I was very lucky last night to have heard the Nashville Symphony Brass quintet in concert. Their program was comprised of fairly modern American composers. I was especially excited to hear David Sampson's Morning Music and Eric Ewazen's Colchester Fantasy, both favorites of mine. William Leathers, new principal trumpet, and Alec Blazec, current 2nd trumpet, were outstanding! I was especially impressed by their ability to approach chamber music as chamber musicians. They both played in such an interesting, conversational manner and with such musicianship. While the entire group was fantastic, I was also thrilled to once again hear one of my long time heroes, Gil Long, kill it on tuba. I don't know if I've ever known a better brass player. If you get a chance to hear Mr. Leathers, Mr Blazec or any of the Nashville Symphony, you should! _________________ -scott |
