Looks like no one has posted this here yet, and it's been made public by the school (and is spreading on facebook).

James Thompson is retiring at the end of this semester, and Craig Morris has been announced as the new associate professor of trumpet at Eastman School of Music (University of Rochester), starting in Fall 2023.

You may know him as the principal trumpet of Chicago Symphony Orchestra after Herseth, or as the current faculty at Frost School in Miami.

Congratulations to Prof. Morris!

Eric

When Morris was with the CSO he came to my house to try a Martin Committee I had for sale. He played it for a few minutes on our back porch while I did some work upstairs.

When my wife came home from shopping she said “I heard a trumpet but I knew it wasn’t you.”

Cold, but we’re still married.

Jim,
That was funny. I had to read it to my wife...she laughed.

My favorite quote so far:

An update from Eastman, this from the Dean today:
Quote:
A few weeks ago, I announced Craig Morris’ appointment to the faculty as a new trumpet professor. Unfortunately, Mr. Morris informed me recently that he will not be able to join the faculty due to personal factors. I am very pleased to announce that Andrew McCandless, principal trumpet of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and trumpet professor at the Glenn Gould School/The Royal Conservatory of Music, will serve as a full-time member of the Eastman faculty next year. I am very grateful to Mr. McCandless for his willingness to serve in this one-year appointment.

Yup, confirmed. A friend of mine has a student that will be attending Eastman in the fall and told me that he will be studying with Mr. McCandless, at least for one year.

A follow up on the previous one-year appointment, from the Eastman Dean:

Quote:

I am pleased to announce that Andrew McCandless has accepted our offer to become our full-time Professor of Trumpet beginning in the 2024-25 academic year. This will follow his one-year appointment in 2023-24, where he will commute between Toronto and Rochester.

As you know from my previous correspondence, Andrew is currently the principal trumpet of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and trumpet professor at the Glenn Gould School/The Royal Conservatory of Music. At age 20, while a student at Eastman, Andrew was offered his first orchestral position as coprincipal trumpet of the Savannah Symphony. Building upon his orchestral experience, Andrew left Savannah for appointments with the Kansas City Symphony as associate principal trumpet, the Buffalo Philharmonic as principal trumpet, and the San Francisco Symphony as associate principal trumpet.

We excited about the future of the trumpet studio under the direction of professors Andrew McCandless and Wes Nance. I hope you join me in celebrating this appointment.

I can't wait to see what Morris brings to the trumpet teachers at Eastman!

He has an amazing list of jobs, and I'm sure students will learn a lot from him.

Craig Morris will not be teaching at Eastman - Andrew McCandless will be.

But he's fulfilled his required single TH thread contribution, so he can now officially fake-sell anything in the TH Marketplace!
