I noticed this phrase used in relation to a discourse re Pilczuk pipes. Would a Bach 25O leadpipe be considered a suitable match for a sweet old Ambassador?

the question is, are both the horn and the pipe reverse, or not, and will the pipe fit the tuning slide? If they pysically fit together, is the pipe the proper match with the horn for you? The only way to know is to order pipes in different sizes FOR THAT HORN, and test them carefully for blow/pitch/etc. playing characteristics.

If that doesn't work give Rich Ita a call. He make Pilczuk pipes. he'll hook you up with somethin that would work.

You could always do what I did with my 1948 Ambassador: send the horn to Cliff Blackburn and ask him to put on whatever pipe gives it the best sound. He put a 19-348 on mine and it's a killer! The sound is big and dark. Playability is open and easy.

Cliff charges $175 for a Bb Louisville leadpipe, plus installation. I don't remember exactly how much that was. I do recall he did some additional work on the horn. If you knew which pipe you wanted I'm sure he would sell it to you ala carte, so to speak, so you could have a local repair person install it. I had a Pilczuyk pipe installed locally for $75.

Hi!

Speaking of Ambassadors. Would you ever consider changing the Bell and the leadpipe? I know I am a trumpet player that can't stop messing around with my equipment.

Thanks!

Mike

I'd definitely consider change the pipe and have (see above). I don't think I'd change the bell unless it was damaged. If your're really into tinkering, it would be interesting to try. There are several bells of various kinds on eBay right now. Couple of pretty high end ones as I recall.

I was reading the web page on Pilczuc pipes from the link above. In the information on it, it claims "No triggering is necessary to play in tune with almost one hundred percent of the musicians that are now using the Accusonic. Only on a few rare occasions has anyone had to trigger an almost imperceptible amount due to past compensating habits of the individual. With time they will lose that habit."

Can anyone comment on this? Does it improve the intonation so much triggereing isn't necessary? It even claims you can remove compensating mechanisms from the instrument!

Hey SLJ,

I had the Pilczyuk put on a 1937 Olds Super, which I sold recently on eBay. The pipe enhanced playability considerably, but I needed to thin the herd a bit so it went to a player in Virginia.

As mentioned above, the Blackburn is on my Ambassador and it turned a good horn into a great one. I'm absolutely sold on Blackburn pipes. I wish I could afford on of his horns.

re: intonation of the Pilczuk pipes--their claims may be a bit overstated, but I found that it greatly enhanced the intonation of a 1952 Olds Ambassador throughout the range of the horn. I still use the third slide, but have yet to hear a need for it on the first slide (which is a good thing, as my first slide has no ring or saddle).

I'm testing four pilczuk pipes right now on my Ambassador. I notice a definite improvement in intonation, and three of the four pipes seem to be bigger leadpipes, so they open up the horn in a way I really like, especially the bottom register (they might also open the upper register, if I could play up there). However, while the intonation is better, I still need to use my kicker on the usual suspects.

I recently got my 1950 LA Olds Ambassador back from having a new Bach 43 leadpipe installed.

The result is absolutely FANTASTIC!

The repairman used the tuning slide receiver from the Ambassador and trimmed the Bach pipe to fit (the length of those is slightly longer than the original Olds pipe).

I have been playing it for the past few days, and am absolutely stunned at what a great horn this adds up to.

I want to thank Trumpet Herald and its contributors for bringing this idea to me, for I certainly would have never thought of it on my own. This particular Ambassador was already a sweet playing horn (the valves are to die for), but now I would pit it against any top-of-the-line horn. Pitch is great, response (low, medium and high . . . up to 4th leger line G) is incredible, and I'm able to shape the tone however I want. Ballads, bebop, lead, legit . . . it's all coming out so easily I might just sell one or two of my "top-end" horns and play this one all the time.

Seriously, it was worth the $$$ . . . a successful experiment.

Thanks, guys!

Rich

Here's mulligan stew playing three different horns; the Ambassador is lacquered w/Pilczuk leadpipe and he is very fond of it.

The other two horns are Schilke and Wild thing.

In just that order.

Olds, Schilke and Wild Thing.

For more you could go to http://www.trumpetmaster.com and see the WT tour stop #3.

That is where the clip originated from.
