Maybe it's just me, but I don't find this horn attractive at all, and the price is just... well... "ambitious".

This is a shame. Is there a possibility to take them to court for this violation ?
Like tattooing the Queen of England or overpainting a Rembrandt.

Yeah, I agree, it's a bit underdone. They left out the tassels.

Blecch. Kinda reminds me of the inside of this Taxi I once hailed in Mejico City. All that's missing is the little dingle-ball fringe and the bobbing chihuahua in the back window with the eyes that lit up when the guy hit the brakes....which was often, as I recall

And what ARE those things on the valve casings? Looks like little atomic symbols...does this make the the valves more "explosive" in their response?
Somebody went a little over the top with the engraving, methinks.

Regards,

Lori

I've been watching these guys for a while. They once stole an Opera from me in the last two seconds of an auction (the one, I believe, they fixed up and tried to sell for $4000), so I have taken a personal interest in what they're doing and how well they're doing it. To keep it short, I'm not seeing them selling a lot of horns on eBay, at least not these overdone vintage Olds horns they seem to have a lot of. It's a shame, too. Both the Opera and the Mendez are extremely beautiful horns with their very simple, very classy engraving.

I've bought a couple of horns from Malcolm (Alaska Brass) but I was very lucky and got them for an excellent price. Too often his expectations are far too high. He did cancel an auction I was bidding on, and was the high bidder, with seconds left to go!? Against the rules but what can you do?

I bought an Ambassador (yes, one of his red ones) it plays excellently and is fun for dixieland and Christmas. The other was a 1939 Olds Super. It's a nice horn but the valve stems and buttons weren't Olds originals. In fact the stems were 2 gold and 1 silver! He said he'd fix it for me but I ended up getting stems and buttons from another eBayer.

Now if the Mendez looked like this one, it would be worth something!

This one's a slightly more tastefully done Ambassador:

But can you imagine paying nearly $1200 for a student horn (even if it is a good one, like Ambassadors are)?!

One word on the "baked Alaska" Olds Ambassador: hahahahahahahaha!

This is as good as the "professional" BUNDY C trumpet they had a while back. Translation= chopped off BUNDY student Bb horn, Circa 1970-ish....

Is the air thinner up there in Alaska? These guys don't quite seem to be thinking straight. No, wait....it's gotta be the lacquer stripping chemicals they're using....

Regards,

Lori

Maybe it's just me, but that Ambassador looks like they've heavily engraved solely to take away from the fact that it was so over-buffed in the restoration that the original engraving is all but invisible. Sad, very sad.
