Does anyone know if Chris Botti ever used the CC method?

Chris was a student of Bill Adam at Indiana, and continues to use the Routine. Don't know if he also pursued Caruso.

I'll see him next week. We spent a lot of time together when we were in college and in Adam's studio. To my knowledge, Mr. Adam was Chris's only major trumpet teacher and I doubt if he has done anything from the Caruso approach.

Chris doesn't need any help from Caruso or anyone else. BTW I'm a Caruso advocate and former student.

I hear and see him tonight.

BTW, if the OP's question was inspired by the fact that Chris recorded a piece called "Caruso," it was inspired by the great operatic tenor, Enrico Caruso. Mr. Adam always encouraged his students to study the recordings of great singers who had brilliant follow through, great use of the breath, phrasing, resonance and freedom on the breath. I know Chris really heeded that advice.

I was just wondering. I’m nosey like that. Btw speaking of Chris Botti I was watching a YouTube Chris Botti with Sting live concert and man it was awesome!! But I did see something that really surprised me. Chris had a a BRIGHT red ring on his upper lip where his mp is placed. It was crazy. I’ve never seen anything like that before.

Yep. And he plays off center. Always has. That should tell you how important those things are to serious players.

From what I understand, CB studied with Thara Memory .. can’t recall who in Portland told this to me but a few years later, there was a video of young CB and TM soloing and they sounded like they shed together a bunch.

That is correct. Then he went to IU and studied with David Baker and William Adam.

So why the bright red ring? Is that just from so much pressure? Is that a permanent thing or just when he plays?!? I appreciate the insight! To keep this Caruso focused I’ll say this - I don’t think Caruso would approve! 😆😂🤦‍♂️ jk

I don’t think I know a single professional trumpet player who doesn’t either have a pressure ring or misshapen (aka mangled) chops. Occupational hazard. If you firmly hold your lips between unyielding metal and teeth for 5-10 hours a day, 7 days a week, as most great pros do it’s going to happen.

Carmine wouldn’t have cared nor would he ever mention the way the embouchure looks. And worrying about pressure or placement is totally alien to CC’s approach. Do the calisthenics the way they are meant to be done (4 rules, etc) and you will improve your playing over time to a professional level.

And, to answer the OP’s original question, Botti never was a Caruso student, he played gigs with Laurie Frink back in the day and took some lessons with John McNeil (almost totally focused on improv, not trumpet). CB is a hard core Adam guy.
