I’m new to the forum. This topic is relevant to me as I might be starting to do some more shows this fall. However, I recall in the Spring, after playing a week of intense rehearsals and 4 shows on the weekend, I found my chops turning real red and starting to crack… I mean, noticeably red like I was wearing lipstick on all of my chops. Never had that before. I realized I wasn’t keeping moisturizer going. I guess as you get older new things pop up when playing. Has anyone used Robinson’s remedies?
I would love feedback on any types of lip remedies, such as Blistex, etc. _________________ Wendy D.

I use an inexpensive 'chap stick type' balm every night before sleep. Just plain 'grease' - no camphor, etc. Dry lips are most common during cold weather heating season with dry indoor air. _________________ Most Important Note ? - the next one !

Chapstick Blue for me, has aloe vera and sunscreen, and does not seem to "gum up" my lips as badly as some of the other remedies.
Very personal choice. _________________ "After silence, that which best expresses the inexpressible, is music" - Aldous Huxley |

Chopsaver was developed for this. I cannot recommend it as I haven’t personally used the product, but it seemed to get good reviews on here. |

I like Blistex DCT (Daily Conditioning Treatment), which comes in a tan tub. Some of the stick/tube varieties such as Chapstick are too waxy for me. After especially brutal nights, I use vitamin E oil. My lips always feel better the next day.
Blistex Medex, in a blue tub, is also good, but you wouldn't want to use this on the job as it contains the analgesics camphor and menthol. |

Most Lip Balms are a trap.
I've played as intense playing schedules as almost anyone on this forum at times and - unless it was winter and the entire week was below zero - I've never needed lip balm as a remedy for just playing my horn.
That said, several of the ones mentioned - Chopsaver, for example - aren't terrible for you or your lips. I generally use Burt's Bees, myself, but that's because I use it maybe a half dozen to a dozen times over the course of several years.
Chapstick is best put in the trash, not on your face or lips. Blistex is no better. It's all chemical crap that's not making your lips better, it's making them need more chemical crap. _________________ LA Benge 3X Bb Trumpet

Blistex Deep Renewal, here. Don't overdo these lip balms, they can become addictive. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Over the years I've tried all kinds of stuff - for me Blistex in a squeeze tube has always been my go-to. It penetrates and heals faster than just about anything else I've ever tried, and I've tried Chops Saver, which I didn't particularly care for. Blistex in a tube is still my favorite, and I stumbled into it clear back in high school at band camp one year where my lips were incredibly chapped, and I had gotten that irritated red-ring all around my mouth from licking at them. I started using it around day 2 or 3, and they were completely healed up by the end of the week.
Blistex in a tube - give it a shot. If your chops are really beat up, t'll take a few days, but only a few days. I swear by it. _________________ Patrick Gleason

Seriously, I’ve used Carmex, Vaseline, Chop Saver, Chapstick, Burt’s Bees…..for me Robinson is by far the best I’ve used. It’s not cheap, but it’s also worth it.

DCT is my favorite. I was told that Carmex works too but shouldn't be used too often. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

Have been using Robinson's since my instructor told me about it. Great stuff. Chopsaver and Chapstick don't compare. |

Many years ago I used lips balms because my lips were chapped and they never got better. I stopped using balms completely, my lips healed, and I've never needed them since.
YMMV |

Interesting thread. I'll echo the above.
I agree with zaferis, that some lip balms are "medicated" with menthol, camphor, phenol, salicylates, etc., which act as astringents, and will dry out your skin. Other lip balms have so-called "natural" or "herbal" ingredients, that are mostly worthless and are also potential irritants.
Lip balm overuse can lead to a paradoxical drying out of your lips, as the natural processes in your skin become altered due to lip balm overuse. Something that maybe oxleyk experienced.
The main benefit a lip balm is to use it as an emollient or a sun screen. Everything else is probably not all that helpful. All things being equal, find a balm with fewer ingredients. And for some people, there may be diminishing returns with lip balm overuse.

I never needed lip balm until I moved from Mississippi to Utah, where it's so dry that I couldn't function without it. Been in Texas now for 36 years and I've never gotten over my addiction--I use it several times during the day and after every practice session. I used Blistick for many years; recently I've just been using the stuff my dental hygienist puts in my swag bag after every visit. It's called Chap-Ice. It has vitamin E in it and seems to work fine. I've got a few sticks of it stockpiled around the house--in my desk, in the bathroom, and always one in my pocket. _________________ Bryan Fields
