|
|
The Rebel Allinace Jazz Ensemble has been re-mastering the audio work of some of their recordings and they've been releasing a lot of vids with Steve Reid in them recently. I must admit that I've become quite enamored with that fire-hose kind of directionality and projection.
As a gearhead (yep, another one these silly questions), I've been stuck wondering what horn he's playing. My best guess is that it's a Schilke?. There are some design elements that make it pretty obvious like the first slide ring, second valve slide having two nibs, receiver style, etc. but they don't match any of Schilke's current designs, as his 3rd valve slide has a water key, and those are basically nonexistent on Schilke horns.
So, I wondered if anybody had any insight on what it might be.
And no, as soon as I find out what horn it is, I'm not gonna go and buy one because I think it will make me sound like Steve Reid. There's no magic pill except for efficient practice. It would be nice to know its specs to see how they aid him in delivering his sound concept, though.

And yes, I am aware that he was rumored to own a Kanstul Mariachi, but that is clearly not what he is playing in these videos _________________ -E

He played a Calicchio for many years, not sure if that is what he is on now. _________________ Calicchio 1s2
