A dear friend sent me an old obituary for Don Goldie which was published some time ago as Goldie died on November 19, 1995. He was one of the classic trumpeters mostly known for his work with Jack Teagarden. While living in Miami he was often featured on the Jackie Gleason TV shows. He was plagued with chronic diabetes which affected his eyesight involving many operations. Compounding his problems were cuts that refused to heal and surgery on his wrist which ruled out trumpet playing for a period of time. Depressed with all these ailments he excused himself from his home nurse and went into another room and shot himself.

Please listen to this great player's recordings and remember the beauty of his artistry.

Thanks, Tony! Don Goldie was a great one for sure. Transcriptions of a couple of his solos are in the Jacques Gilbert collection. "My Romance" is a great example of how a solo doesn't have to be a blizzard of notes to be beautifu.

My favorite Don Goldie piece. An amazing solo, clean as a whistle, beautiful tone, culminating on an effortless lip trill on a high F.
