Visiting family in Hawaii and went to hear The Royal Hawaiian Band yesterday.
The performed an old piece from the 60’s called Quando Quando. The man who emcees the performance sang it. They brought DeShannon Higa down front to solo. This guy is fabulous. I’ve heard him in a jazz setting and he can play with anyone. When the vocalist came back in, DeShannon played behind him. Got to the end and he ended the piece on a huge A over high C. I was sitting in front and didn’t look like he was working real hard.

He’s a local but there’s no info on the RHB website about where he went to school. Same info on his website and Facebook page.
I’d guess he’s late 40’s maybe 50. Lot younger than we are!
I’ve met him once some years ago at a tribute concert for Jimmy Borges shortly after Jimmy passed away. Nice guy.
I know he lived in NNC for a time and his wife was in the cast of Miss Saigon. When I was at Berklee a trumpeter named Tony Gorusso was one of the top lead players. I think he was in the pits for that show.

Thanks, Peanuts. I think he's the grandson of a guy I knew but not sure.

He's a really good player. Nice guy as well.
My wife is from Honolulu, and we fly over every year for and extended visit. I've heard him maybe 4-5 times over the years. A couple of times were in a small group jazz setting, the others were with The Royal Hawaiian Band.
