That was super! Thank you! Wonderful playing all around.
Look at Mr. Payne at 5:30 when he's not even being featured.
And when he is at 31:00+. Fabulous playing and showmanship.
But, who gets the glances of respect at 34:48?!
PS: Wish I knew where to go to listen to great stuff like this live! _________________ Craig Mitchell |

I have the record (yes, vinyl) of this concert, released in 1981.
Nice G over double C by Madrid at the end of the "Two O'Clock Jump" reprise. _________________ J. Notso Nieuwguyski |

Glad you all enjoyed it. I've personally not heard a lot of John Madrid, but have been aware of his reputation for decades now. It's great to finally hear how much of a stud this guy was. The band was on it that night. _________________ "I'm 73 and I'm still learning." - Maurice Murphy

Here's a one-hour documentary about Madrid created by one of his friends, K.O. Skinsnes:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbPi8y3wPDg&t=2043s
K.O. showed me an early cut of the documentary when I was auditioning trumpets at the Stomvi U.S. headquarters a few years ago. There were a few performance clips I guess K.O. couldn't get the rights to, because they aren't in the final version. One was a performance of Don Menza's "Groove Blues," with Madrid playing the Cat Anderson shout chorus solo from the Louie Bellson "Explosion" album pretty much note-for-note. The reaction of the unfortunate trombone player sitting right in front of Madrid was pretty funny, as long as you ignored how much hearing loss he was probably suffering. _________________ J. I re-watched that video again and the words Wynton used in the Ken Burns PBS program about Jazz came back to me. "That's some pretty fancy trumpet playing but it's not jazz". This after very little of Harry being shown. I would strongly disagree with that statement and I would imagine all the jazz trumpet players I listen to would as well.
