Hi everybody, it's been a while!

I was just listening to the following recording and I thought, I've just got to share it with you all. Maynard's arrangement of "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" is one of my absolute favorites of all his music. But other than a live recording of mediocre quality, he never recorded it in the studio, and that's sad.

But Claude Gordon student Paul Cacia recorded it and wow!!! It's quite something. The tempo is a little too fast for my taste. I have a feeling that they recorded it at that tempo to make it 4 minutes long. The playing on everyone's part is phenomenal.

I actually downloaded it using 4K Downloader (a free program) and then when I play the video in VLC Media Player I set the speed to 90% and the tempo is perfect to my tastes.

Here's a link to the youtube video:

Enjoy!

Best wishes,

John Mohan

Good to hear from you, John. I hope you are doing well.

Youtube lets you slow the playback down as well--I agree it's just right at 90%.

Other than a rather pesky case of Medullary Thyroid Cancer, I am doing just fine! Having a second surgery for it in December (first one was November 2022 and they didn't get all of it out). Enough about that...

When I slowed the video down on YouTube the first slower setting was 67%. That's why I downloaded the video and then played it at 90%. Is there a way to make YouTube play videos at 90% speed?

Best wishes for a fast and full recovery.

Thanks for sharing the video. Cacia has amazing chops and technique. Very, very few players are his equal in that regard. When I hear him play I feel guilty for skipping measures in my Systematic Approach lessons.

I do find myself wishing for a bit more contrast in Cacia's playing. To me, that's part of what set guys like Maynard and Doc apart from other brilliant altissimo players.

Use YouTube "settings" menu, then "playback speed," then "custom."

Wishing you a quick and complete recovery, John.
