I use the same fingerings as the upper octave, with the exception of low F natural (1-2-3) and pedal C (1-2-3). (This works for me.. might not work for you) If you can get pedal C to play using an open fingering then that is best.. but if you can't then use 1-2-3. If you're interested in studying pedal tones.. you might want to pick up a copy of Warm Ups and Studies by James Stamp.

When you are learning to do these, it can help if you use a mute. After you get comfortable with the notes down there, take out the mute. I use the same fingerings as for the notes 1 octave above.

Eric,

Checked out your link. This is the best explination of how to play pedals that I've ever come across. I not only appreciate the demo, but the tips (let it be flat & then work it up..........take a breath if you need it, etc.). This may seem like little things, but they're important to someone who can't or is struggling to play pedals.

I also think I've realized a qwirk in how I learn. I've read most of the same info about playing pedals more then once, probably here on TH, from many different people. For me, I think hearing you say the words as opposed to reading the words, made your points much clearer to me immediately. Strange, isn't it? And I love to read.......I mean, I'm here, right?

Anyway, thanks for sharing the link. Very helpful for me.

Marty

Folks........this really works. After my previous post, I pulled out the trumpet and was able to decend to a double pedal A right off. No warm up, nothing. Of course I started on G in the staff and chromatically arpeggio'd my way down, like Eric's demo. First time I've ever been able to go below pedal C. Thanks again Eric.
