So is the Couesnon the “standard for the flugelhorn sound?

I think Mike Metheny achieves the "ideal" flugelhorn sound here:

His horn? A Noblet flugelhorn, which is a stencil of an old Leblanc, which is a stencil of an old Courtois (the model before the 154/155/156/159R "direct air column" models). I know because I asked him. (He also told me his mouthpiece of choice is a Bach 6 'no letter' flugel piece. I thought these would have to be custom ordered based on Bach's mouthpiece catalog, but Mouthpiece Express stocks them.)

I actually acquired one of these Noblets a couple of years ago; it really does have a very warm, sweet tone through its entire range.

I think so! The light, French, sound is what many go for. It's also a design that has been copied many times over or inspired new designs that go for the light, small bore, sound. Listen to any Tom Harrell Flugel track or Freddie from CTI period. Many others like Bobby Shew, Donald Byrd, etc all played Couesnons at some point.

One of my favourite flugelhorn sounds. I believe this is a Couesnon.

I'm pretty sure Shorty Rogers also played a Couesnon flugelhorn. Listen to the difference in sounds. Don't overlook the role of the mouthpiece and mental sound picture in the player's head.

I recently sold my 1945 Couesnon flugelhorn.

I believe Roy Hargrove and his Inderbinen "Wood" flugelhorn has caught my ear, to a remarkable level of tone nuance.

I play a pre-war F.Besson (Paris) flugelhorn. And, sometimes, a Bach Model 182 - the so-called "Woody Shaw" horn ... along with a Martin Committee flugelhorn.
