|
|
I am a PhD Student from the University of Lincoln looking into works utilising the flugelhorn. Part of this study involves me identifying as many pieces of flugelhorn literature as possible and analysing it to inform how the musical world approaches using and writing for the instrument.
As well as scouring databases, something that is very difficult concerning the flugelhorn because there is often no specific section beyond the overarching tag of 'trumpet music', I felt that who else to ask about repertoire than players!
Ideally I'm looking for any pieces that have flugelhorn listed in the given instrumentation. Pieces with variations such as "for Trumpet, Cornet and Flugelhorn" are welcomed too! My main area of focus for reaching out are pieces from 2007-present day.
If you happen to know of any pieces of music that specify use of the flugelhorn. Especially pieces post 2007, I would greatly appreciate it if you could post the work, composer and year (if you know that information) to this thread!
Thank you so much in advance !

I don't have many that are post-2007, so I've included the entire list.
Claude Bolling. Toot Suite. 1982. Fifth movement, Vesperale, specifies use of flugelhorn for the entire movement.
Robert Bradshaw. Appalachian Shadow. 2020. Written specifically for flugelhorn and piano.
Robert Bradshaw. Warm Sun, Cool Breeze. 2005. Written specifically for flugelhorn and piano.
Robert Bradshaw. A Sunday Excursion. 1992. Written specifically for flugelhorn and piano.
Richard Peaslee. Nightsongs. 1974. Written specifically for flugelhorn and piano.
Anthony Plog. Paradigms. 2012. Written specifically for flugelhorn and piano.
Elizabeth Raum. Lines and Trajectories. 2022. There is an optional flugelhorn part for the third movement ("Song").
Joseph Turrin. 2 Portraits. 1999. Written specifically for flugelhorn and piano.
Joseph Turrin. Three Episodes. 2006. Written for trumpet or flugelhorn. |

I played Nightsongs on my senior recital in undergrad and really enjoyed the piece, except for a high C# on flugelhorn. Ugh! |

If you look to brass band literature, there are some specific pieces/arrangements that are intended for a flugelhorn soloist out front, not just a few bars of solo.
William Himes is a modern composer that has a few in that vein, but there are a lot more. _________________ "Music is like candy, you throw the (w)rappers away." |

Ewazen Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Brahms
I can't seem to find a date quickly but I believe it was written this century, and probably more recently than 2007 but I can't say for sure. |

There is a Brass Junkies Episode with Jen Oliverio who specializes in Cornet and Flügelhorn.
https://www.brassjunkies.com/episodes/tbj219
She also has a CD with some pieces written for Flügelhorn (or at least played on) but doing a quick search I did not find which pieces are played with Trumpet or Flügelhorn or Cornet.
But I recall that they talk about that CD in the podcast. |

Thank you for this! I've got a strong background in brass band flugelhorn myself so a large amount of flugelhorn solo repertoire within the brass band medium is an area I am acutely aware of. It's definitely nice to see someone recommend looking into brass band music though![b] |

In addition to Peaslee's aforementioned "Nightsongs," the second movement of his "Catalonia" calls for flugelhorn. Several of Vizzutti's works call for it as well, though off the top of my head I can only come up with "The Rising Sun." _________________ Josh Coffey

Firework by Thomas Doss, 2013. The flugel basically doubles either the saxes or French horns, but it’s a wonderful piece of concert band lit. |

Not "music written for flugelhorn" per se, but we would collectively be remiss if Sergei Nakariakov's sundry four-valve flugelhorn arrangements and performances of cello concertos were not mentioned. Selected flugelhorn renditions include
J. Haydn Cello concerto in C major, Hob.Vllb
J. Haydn (Rosetti) Concerto for two horns in E flat major
W. A. Mozart Horn concerto in D major, KV 412, Horn concerto in E flat major, KV 417, Horn concerto in E flat major, KV 447, Horn concerto in E flat major, KV 495
A. Vivaldi Cello concerto in C minor, RV 401, Concerto for two Cellos in G minor
M. Bruch Kol Nidrei (also as string orchestra version)
R. Glière Horn concerto in B flat major
R. Strauss Horn concerto No.1 in E flat major, op.11, Horn concerto No. 2 in E flat major
Franz Strauss Horn concerto in C minor op.8

I have heard the 2nd mvt of the Halsey Stevens concerto played on flugel. That was maybe 30 years ago, and I don't remember what I thought of it.
When I was a junior in college. there was a piece I played that was written specifically for flugel & piano. If I still have the music it's buried deep in a box in storage.
It was called "Edolem Ladom" which is "Modal Melode(y)" in retrograde.
That was 45 years ago. I do not remember who composed it. Or much of anything else about it except written for flugel & the retrograde title.
Would Hovaness' "Prayer for St. Gregory" work on flugel? _________________ Tim Wendt
