Hi all,

I recently acquired a 1900s amati rotory trumpet from Germany on Ebay, and had it professionally cleaned. It originally smelled foully of a very strong metal smell, which thankfully mostly went away with the cleaning. However, now, whenever I hold it for a bit or play it, i start to feel queasy or nauseous, and I get a headache. I'm wondering if anybody has come across something like this before, and if I should be concerned about it? Or just wait and hopefully go away?

Have you tried sterilizing the mouthpiece ?
Bacteria can live in there .

Have the corks and felts been replaced? Old ones might be the problem.

Most Important Note ? - the next one !
KNOW (see) what the next note is BEFORE you have to play it.
PLAY the next note 'on time' and 'in rhythm'.
Oh ya, watch the conductor - they set what is 'on time'.

Interesting topic that brings to mind numerous questions.

Your writing suggests that even if not playing the horn, simply holding it causes the problem? Is that what you are saying, that not even brining the horn to your lips and blowing, just holding it causes the problems?

Is the horn finished or raw brass?

Have you ever played, or held raw brass instruments?

I have heard that some people have a strong allergic response to raw brass, possibly this is the case?
