I ask for advice on a mouthpiece similar to the Bach 3C CNC, but with a slightly smaller diameter and a slightly less sharp edge.

Expensive - Reeves 42M

Less so - Maybe a Stork 4C or 4D.

It depends on what makes a rim feel "sharp" to you.

You might consider the Yamaha Shew Jazz. While it is about the same as a Bach 3C there are some slight changes in the rim that might make it feel "softer". The backbore is a little tighter so the whole package might feel smaller to you. They are not too expensive - about $55 sometimes with free shipping.

- Schilke 12B4, Schilke 10B4 (These have larger throats and backbores so they might might be more tiring for you even though they are smaller.)

Yamaha 14B4 GP works wonders for me.

Bach 6C or Yamaha 13B4. They are noticeably smaller though than a 3C.

A Bach 6C, to me, feels like a downsized 3C and I find the rim more comfortable than a modern 3C. The Curry 6 line is modelled on the Mt Vernon Bach 6 rim (different to the 6C). While it is smaller it feels very similar on the face but with a flatter rim.

+1 for a Reeves 42M , pricey but a huge upgrade.

It's always tricky when a player wants a less sharp edge - bite.

The Reeves has the rim high point a little closer to the outside - so you don't feel the "bite" as much.

The Stork has the high point closer to the bite (which makes it feel smaller), but slopes down at a more gradual angle.

For some players you could keep the rim the same but reduce the undercut and the "bite" would feel softer.

So the 6C and Yamahas have nice rims but seem to go straight down a little more into the cup after the bite - to me that makes them feel sharper - but I have a lot of lip intrusion into the cup. A player with little lip intrusion might think they were great.

Sorry ALETRUMPET - you will need to demo several different mouthpieces. Start with the ones in the posts above.

It gets harder:

add Warburton 4MC and 4MS to the list of possible candidates.

Also GR66M and 66MS.

Also Yamaha 14B4.

The same rim that is a little smaller in diameter will feel not as sharp. Your lips are hitting the rim at a different angle. The difficulty is also in playing brands where the rims are different for different sizes. Better to start with a brand that is consistent thoughout the diameter sizes.

Josef Klier USA pieces. Affordable and much more comfortable than Bach pieces but keeping the general Bach style and feel.

Bach mouthpieces over the eras have varied in specifications, and there are differences between different examples. Yamaha mouthpieces are generally pretty consistent. I find a Yamaha 14B4 to have a slightly smaller cup diameter than my Bach 3C, and I have a feeling that the rim is slightly more rounded and may feel slightly less sharp.

Take care and best wishes

Lou

This mouthpiece comparator shows the cup diameters and cup shapes to be much the same, with the Yamaha 14B4 having a more rounded rim.

I am a total amateur, so take this as such. I find my Curry 3C to be my most reliable mouthpiece. By that, I mean that I can sometimes coax a bit nicer sound from a Bach 1 1/2 C and a Stork Vacchiano 5C but for a long session, the Curry stays constant. The Curry is a bit brighter than my 1970s Bach 3C. I also have the Curry 3 FLD flugel piece and the Curry 3C TC (Trumpet/Cornet). The 3C TC has the deep Cornet cup and gives a softer tone which can be nice when playing lyrical studies. I play a Wick 3 for cornet but have been tempted to get a Curry 3 cornet as well.
