( so don't confuse me with an experienced player )
One criticism might be that he wasn't intent to set the world on fire with wide use of harmonic progressions, as part of the landscape at the time. But with Dixie music and some standards, he was able to come up with recordings that few others could approach, let alone surpass with advanced harmonic ideas. From that standpoint, he was one of a kind.
'Bourbon Street' is perhaps one of those. Cougar Nelson on trombone..
