If you've been playing as long as your sig suggests you should know better than to ask any conductor or personnel manager a question...

When I was in high school (in the late 70's) I played in the pit orchestra for a local church's production of "South Pacific." During rehearsals I noticed that the gentleman playing Emile was wearing a digital watch. I later mentioned it to the director, and he gave me that look like "who the hell cares?" He probably didn't want to hear it from some 17 year old kid, but at the performances there was no watch. Well, you know what? It's 45 years later, and still nobody wants to hear it!

Only in high schools… I direct a music ensemble performance program in a high school. We have a very clear stated dress code for performances outside of school hours / off-site. At the same time, kids will be kids and will dress to make their own statement, protest, or even not own the required clothing.

We have said what is needed. We encourage. We offer to help with a loaner jacket, or shirt, etc. In the bitter end, the kids play. Personally, I wouldn’t give a rat’s about the watch they are wearing. Or those white socks (will quietly mention it later on post concert) tights, suspect ear rings, etc etc.

Life is to short!

Distracting for whom?

There are things we don’t do on stage, wear cologne / perfume, Batman masks, or KISS style make up for black and white Concert dress.

A watch? Next I’ll be banned from wearing my patent Doc Martins!

Just push it up your wrist a bit… and give the conductor a chill pill.

This isn't rocket science (it's business)

When someone is paying you to do a job, if you ever want them to do so again
- Do what they ask of you, without comment, or don't take the gig
- Perform competently, have the tools you need, and be on time
- Treat everyone around you with respect

It's called professionalism

It's no different in any other employment role in the real world. You get paid to do the job the employer wants done, not what you feel like.

And in high school, that's where they either learn it or they dont.

Gee, either agree to the terms of the job/performance or don't take it. What a concept.

Was using the colloquial term. Have NEVER heard anyone verbalize, "doctor". Kinda like it is common to hear "Birgies" (or, "Berkies"), rather than the formal "Birkenstocks".
Also, the Hip-Hop / street name for "Timberlands" (as in boots) is commonly expressed as, "Timbas".

Got it?

Huh ?

That's what I said.
ONLY ... it's spelled with an "e". NOT with an, "i", like the Martin horns.

Seems-as-though the dreaded Dunning-Kruger Effect seeps into discourse here on this website.

The colloquial term is "Doc Martins" with an i. The correct spelling is "Dr. Martens".

:Yes. Thnx for the link.

I have two pair; the first, many, many years old. The 2nd, maybe 10-years old.

Comfy, practical (especially the bullet-proof, anti-slip soles ... I wear them on construction sites).
Distinctive with the prominent yellow stitching.
Seems to provide recognizable "street cred".
I don't wear them as much in public. The young gals always notice. Have become quite pricey (as has everything, I suppose).

Dress Code? The dress code is what the MD/Conductor says it is. This isn't complex.

You can either:
* have a private talk with him/her (which may or not resolve it)
* Don't wear a shiny watch
* quit the ensemble

This isn't 1910 working down at the Ford plant, the boss doesn't just make up the rules.

It's just sad that anyone would choose to behave unprofessionally. When you are hired to do a job, someone is paying for your time, and your actions, and they have an interest, arguably right, to receive the services they are paying for - whatever that may be.

But if that is not reason enough, consider this: the person making the rules, is probably going to have a lot to say about who gets the call next time. Behave unprofessionally and it won't be you (and word does get around).

This is one of the most idiotic rules I have ever come across. It would make sense if the following rules were implemented first:

no lacquered or silver plated brass instruments allowed, only tarnished raw brass
no silver plated keys on woodwinds
no metal flutes, only wood. No metal keys
no varnished string instruments (metal strings are OK, but should be black)
no metal percussion instruments that will reflect light, ex. snare drums (metal supports holding the drum together are a no no), timpani, triangles, cow bells etc.
no cuff links (unless made out of plastic or sea shells)

and now (drum roll please) absolutely NO shiny watches!

Darn it. I just spent some of my irretrievable time reading this stuff. And now I'm adding to it. Something must be wrong with me.
